Hi Guys, anyone know where I can buy a decent chair for guitar practice, lots on Amazon but no delivery to SA?
Cheers
Not sure that's what he meant by "musician's chair"... ?

I'd think something like this : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q3KT4M?tag=ssimian-20, which I reallllly like the look of. No idea where to find one locally though - I've only seen drummer's thrones.

Cheapest to direct import (or get a quote from raru/wantitall to import for you).
I'd be able to make one.
I use a bar stool. Works great.
          Hello!

I had a look at the Sonus, as posted by Shibbibilybob and it looks real awesome.

Amori, did you say you'd be able to make a musician's chair like this one?

My wife is an occupational therapist, and has experience with ergonomics. I'll run these designs past her - maybe she can advise as to the best option / modifications to an existing design that would suit guitarists.

          Kind regards,

          Dave

Now that would a VERY interesting project - amori (aka Murray Kuhn) is a furniture designer/producer and I think his designs of both guitar & furniture are just stunning.

            Keep us posted!
              Hi guys!

I'm going to show Mariana those existing designs for a musician's chair. What she said is she needs to understand how the chair needs to support the guitarist. For instance, when she considers an office chair for someone, it's important that its height is adjustable. The size of the seat should also be such that you can plant both feet comfortably on the ground, that is, the edge of the seat shouldn't be pushing into the back of your knees. So how it sounds to me is that the chair should be tailored to the person - and have the necessary gadgets to be able to make adjustments. When I practice at home, I use a dinner table chair. It supports my upper back, but doesn't offer support for my lower back. I rarely practice more than one hour at a time, so generally I don't feel fatigued sitting in this chair. I do find, however, that I slouch over my guitar and should be mindful of the correct posture.

When you play guitar, what is your posture like?

What kind of support in a chair would benefit you while playing?

How long do you practice in a seated position before taking a break?

Do you read sheet music while you play?

How do you typically hold your guitar while you play?

              Over to you, then.

Sitting, not great. Using a dinner table chair without arms, cushions for padding the seat and back. I try and get both feet flat on the ground so there's three points to distribute weight. I do try and keep the guitar/bass from resting too heavily on the right leg by playing with a strap.

On the rare occasion I will go classical style and rest the guitar on my left leg (which is raised slightly by a foot rest) - 99% for acoustic only.

Because I try and play electric(s) on strap, posture isn't bad - I try not to hunch over. I alternate between sitting and standing - I need to practice electrics standing, as that's how I'll perform.

Good question - I don't know! Something that let's me distribute weight better from bum to feet and let the core muscles not get lazy?

20-60mins. Although I was jamming 2hr+ acoustic sessions when I was playing a lot of acoustic, which is where I'd really benefit from good posture and a comfy chair..

Not really, some tab - but when I'm seated it's usually staring at a youtube tutorial.

                With my hands... ?

Electrics are on a strap - I tend to have them sit a bit higher. They do rest on the right leg, cowboy style - but I try and get some of the weight onto the shoulder instead of the leg. Basses are HEAVY!

Acoustics are cowboy style resting on the right leg, as I said sometimes I go classical style - maybe 5-10% of the time.

Thanks Dave, curious to see where this goes!
