Guitar Rig 3, Session I/O and Cubase confusion

Hi guys and ladies, two questions for you people regarding recording...

I've never tried recording on my PC, so this is all new to me...

So I've recently bought Guitar Rig 3 Session, and upgraded it to the full version using the special offer currently
running from IK. Now I'm trying to get it up and running from within Cubase 4 LE that came with it.

The problem is I can't hear Guitar Rig from within Cubase....

A few points worth noting:

* Guitar Rig 3 is up and running and works perfectly with the Session I/O interface.
* Cubase 4 runs fine and I can open and play back projects without problems.
* I can create a new project, and add Guitar Rig as an effect onto a track, after which it opens Guitar Rig and I can select a preset.
* I have clicked on the little volume monitor button to enable the monitor for that specific channel.
* I have selected the Session I/O as my device under the device settings.
* When I play a chord, I can see the volume bars on the mixer's input go up and down, but not on the output.

Am I missing something here? Why am I not hearing any output...?

Feel free to suggest any other audio program that might be easier than Cubase? What about Reaper, should I just use that?

Along with Guitar Rig, came Kore Player and the Pop Drums soundpack. How do I use these? Do I need a MIDI controller to be able to activate the samples? I'm assuming they also run as a VST?

Phew this is not so easy whilst not seeing the screen. You say you see input signal on the mixer but no output. I would first focus on understanding the mixer. You do not mention creating a track for the guitar to be recorded onto, I have never tried playing through Cubase without that? I do not think the differences between different software packages will be that big that you would not run into about as many things to learn. Would you return your newly bought Merc to the dealer because you don't know how to switch on the boot light like on your Citi Golf?
To use the drums etc you open a new track, associate it with the VST instrument and program the MIDI track through the Drum Editor.

Sorry, I did not mention that, but yes, I've created a track, and I'm trying to record the guitar onto that track.

//Edit: I'm at work now, but once I'm home again I'll take screenshots to show what I'm doing...

did you click the live monitoring button ..... and are the right input and out source selected .

Yes, I clicked the monitoring button. It might be that I have not set the output source correctly. I'll check that. It's possible that in my frustration I missed something simple.

Just call where you bought it from and if they can't help you, get them to refer you to the distributor who I'm sure would be able to.

Thanks for the trouble guys, still no luck though unfortunately.

I have however managed to get Reaper up and running without any problems. I'll use that in the meantime while I figure out what's up with Cubase. <insert random banging head against wall smiley>

Finally got it to work. All it was was a small setting called "Enable live monitoring" under the device setup in Cubase. This needed to be off.

Ha...the same thing that caught me out in Sonar. It's true what Alan says, it's often something simple.
