I've expressed an interest on a Vintage Style SX strat. It's a well-used guitar. I'm a complete beginner and at the price (R800) I am not too worried about buying a lemon. But the reviews on the internet seem OK?
Is there anything specific I should look at before I buy the instrument?
Would servicing it make sense after?

I would look at fret wear. String height and check for buzzing. On pots and switches for scratchiness when plugged in. The rest is cosmetic. SX generally are good entry level guitars and very suitable for projects. For that price take friend check it and buy it after checking.

R800 is not too bad. but look at the neck alignment with the body. Any cracks is a no no. Neck relief. Fret buzzing, humming when it's plugged in could be faulty wiring, dirty pots or the instrument is not earthed. Worn out frets is a sure sign that the guitar worked a lot.
The neck joint should be firm if it is a bolt on.(Obiviously!)
Oh and you shouldn't hear things rattle, pop or twang!(apart from bad playing! LOL!)
If you have any of these above mentioned things on the guitar you should consider your options.
Luthier work is expensive.
Good Luck ? ? ?
