What is it with PRS guitars? Huh?

So I have Tokais. Beautiful guitars. A wine red Custom, a Gold Top with P90s, a quilt-top LP, and an SG.

We won't mention my acoustic - it's not part of this conversation.

We're talking electrics here.

My talent and guitar-playing time don't really warrant the guitars I do have. So why is it that I start drooling almost uncontrollably when a PRS comes up for sale at a great price? I've had two before. The first was a (now-legacy) Standard 22, the second, a Custom 22. I let them go because - to my mind - my talent and guitar-playing time don't really warrant me keeping them.

Does that sound like a self-perpetuating Catch 22 to anyone else?

I believe someone needs to get his quacks in a queue...

Or you could treat it as something to aspire to ? Most people regardless of level would love to have a great guitar to play, if you've already got it then there's nothing holding you back. You could look at it in the positive, the guitar is awesome so it's not giving you a false impression so all practice you do, all progress you make is totally you and there's a lot of reward in being able to feel tangible growth.

That being said if you're into that kind of aesthetic playing wise then Tokais are killer guitars anyway, I just think you shouldn't feel like you need to justify the enjoyment of a nice guitar 8)

Oh no. I think I''m just an idiot for letting the first one go. Shoulda held on to it, then I'd probably still have it, and maybe a few of my Tokais, and be a happier man.

Oh well.

I'll figure it out at some point...

PRSs look so great. But they've never worked for me when it comes to playing. Their scale-length between Fender and Gibson means they sound really indistinctive. They have neither the slinkiness of Gibson scale length, or the tight snap of a Fender. The rotary pickup switch is straight-up annoying. And they just don't sound like much IMO.

You know, it's interesting you say that singe. I enjoyed the 22" scale length a bunch. Played the heck out of my first one - the Std 22. (Mine had the Dragon II pups, I think they've discontinued those?.) But the Custom pretty much stayed in its case unless I took it out to gaze upon it - by that stage I had a Strat (which I later sold on, different story), and by the time I let the Custom go, I had two Tokais - a Les Paul and an SG. (Same scale length.)

I definitely prefer the sound and playability of the Tokais, but never put it down to scale length, which is definitely a factor. Oh well, drooling over.

Whatever you think of PRS vs anything else, I think it's crazy to ever think you're not "worthy" of the guitar you've got to the point where you should get rid of it.

I mean, I get it: I've had those moments of seeing someone absolutely amazing play on something I consider a bit crap right before I dawdle about on an expensive "oooooh" guitar, and I feel useless/guilty about it.

But ultimately, he or she is playing beautifully without needing the help, I am enjoying my playing more because I'm in love with my guitar, and he or she will get there, gearwise, if he wants to. I think we could all do with being less judgmental about other people's gear (I know, contradiction) and accordingly less defensive about what we play.
