The wonders of 4 mics..!!

Neps

Just thought I had to share a quick sound clip from a show I'm busy on.. The clip is just the drum track, recorded in front of a live audience, 4 mics on the drums!!! And just the faders pushed up!!

Very nice! A pair of OHs and close mics on kick and snare?

Nice drummer too! Some very tasty ghosting on the hats and snare.

Snare, Kick and Overheads.. Don't know the drummer.. I missed the recording date.. But the stage had the following on it:

Yamaha Stage Custom Kit with either Zildjian or Sabian Cymbals
ULTRABASS BX4500H head plus Cab
Guitar Amps were Artist choice, so it varied from Fender Stack to a Marshall Combo

Mics were Drums: Earthworks, Vox and amps : Audix.

The show was actualy recorded on a iZ Radar rig.. Nice recording system IMHO!

That sounds great, just goes to show how good quality mic's and setup can change the dynamics of the sound!

I've heard of those mics, can you get 'em in SA?

Just picked up this thread.

Very well recorded. Just goes to show that often less is more......

I'm a big fan of the three mic / four mic configuration for Drums. Great for Jazz as the kit sounds more "Acoustic".

Many years ago I used to do Jazz concerts in Pretoria. Normally I wouldn't bother with mic'ing the drum kit, but on this particular day I happened to have had a Crown PCC-160 boundary mic with me. The drummer set up on stage next to a glass door. I thought "Oh what the heck, lets tape the mic to the glass door and see what happens".

When I pushed up the fader I thought the mic wasn't working until I dropped the fader again. I then realized that I had a fully reproduced drum kit over the PA without needing any EQ etc. Most amazing drum sound I had ever had....(From a Jazz perspective.). I had by pure chance placed the mic in exactly the correct position for a perfect sound.
