People that think they know more than they do

Well sorry to burst out and all, but this issue is driving me up the wall now. I almost strangled the one guy at church yesterday. He complains about my "sound" yesterday and says my distortion sucks. Everyone that knows their business always tells me how amazing it sounds. The comment that almost broke me "you cant hear the difference in notes" on my high gain distortion. In a band environment isnt it about if your sound "mixes" in with the band ? My sound has always been done in a way that it does sound a bit crappy on its own, but put it in with a band or backtrack and it sounds really nice. Id love to here your guys opinion on this ?

i know what you talking about i played in a church where the worship leader was the main" peanut" he couldn't handle it when
i sometimes just started doing a solo in the chorus part of the song.i thought it sounded very good (real mild soloing)
but he always had a bad word or some stuff to say or complaining about sumthin.it got so bad that i took my guitar home
and just came to church singing.the story is that when some people are in the spotlight they don't want to share it with you
secondly what you personally think is a good tone/solo/whatever, other people do not share that with you! because they think
otherwise.maybe there music interests were different. end of the story was that after a few months this guy left the church
for personal reasons and they ask me to be worship leader.

my father once said that you must go to a church where you feel at ease so if you wanna rock go to bikers church if you wanna sleep
go to a church where they like to sleep etc
just a thought!!!!

Every time I jam I learn something new and for anyone to get up on there high horse and tell a muso that they sound wrong is just pathetic. >☹

I don't know if I agree with that. The only way to REALLY improve is to be criticised (sure, in a niceish kinda way). Some people think it needs to be a musician who tells you this or that, but it's a wide spectrum of people who end up possibly buying your music, so all the input you get, good OR bad, should help. You just need to be strong enough to accept some ideas, swallow the pride sometimes, and one sentence from some random guy could end up positively affecting your music and how you approach it ?

I agree. Criticism is good. It should keep you thinking, not second guessing yourself. I've learn't a lot over the last 2 years and the most important thing was how to take and deal with criticism. Don't let it get you down, but don't ignore it. You can learn something from anyone, pro or not.

Yip criticism is good, you just have to decide whether or not you are going to follow the advice or not. But yeah, sometimes you get the same guy coming to you all the time telling what to increase or decrease, well it's not always that easy.

But hey we are in the entertainment business and people are not always going to be kind to you. A thick skin and selective hearings comes with the territory. ?
