I need something that stays relatively clean when cranked.
Go solid state... ? The lab series L5 impressed the hell out of me - warm, loud and clean. But it's a insanely heavy amp for a 2x12. The older blues cubes are also decent. I've a soft spot for the older Peavey Bandits too - the cleans are jazzy clean and the drive channel is pure 80's metal goodness. Marshall valvestates are making comeback, had some fun recently with a few different models - I forgot all about them - better than I remember.
The Laney Cub12 is a great amp for plug n play blues/rock, but it breaks up as the volume goes up. I've never got the AC15/AC30 vibe, they all sound a bit brittle to me, which seems to get more piercing as the volume goes up. I did try a vintage AC10 a while back, that was GREAT - but 50k ???
TokyoP0P did a similar exercise a while back, think he settled on a hot rod deluxe? I reckon hold out for a Superchamp - although I can't recall seeing one for sale, I've seen a few champ & champ clones, but no superchamps. They must be gooooood ?
