Gibson has not yet put the Gibson brand on guitars made outside the USA. Not that Gibsons don't have other issues. In the '80s and '90s they put out "Orville by Gibson" guitars made in Japan (not for export). These were excellent guitars that focused on the classic era Gibsons that Japanese players like most (although, frankly, I'll wager everyone likes those most). I heard that they did intend to make them Gibson Japan, but there was a copyright issue with the name in Japan (this may not be true).
Eventually they moved production to anothe factory and became Orvilles, and then MIJ Epiphones. Now Gibson only makes a handful of Epiphones in Japan. Like their top of the line Casinos.
