March 2016 Challenge - VOTE!!!

Thanks Ricky, but I take no credit for your work. The only 'idea' I had was the sound of a helicopter, which is pretty generic anyway. The entry is all you! Well done man!!

Well done Rickywicky! I realllllyy enjoyed your track, the interaction between the guitar parts (at least three?) really worked for me.

And a big up for Stud - funk be the way forward... :dance:

Now for the bad news...we need another topic, and the winner get to pick - heh, but I think we'll make it easy. I've dug up Stud's (most excellent) list as a guide & I reckon to encourage entries, let's try a mini challenge?

I'm proud to say I didn't vote for myself, as I felt that Meron's own submission was really good: great sound and technicality!

As for the topic for the next competition:

I really dig the idea of Ethereal Ambiance, but also the idea of...Blues! Why don't we do a fusion of the two? Ethereal Blues. That could very well be like late-era Pink Floyd, which I think is quite exciting.

What do you all think?

I like it! Ethereal (or as I interpret it...Ambient) blues is right up my alley ? Although this would be more of a song challenge (1-2min) than a mini challenge (30-40s)?

Reason I"m keen on a mini challenge is to stoke up interest a little bit...

I'm not so sure if that would really work, to be honest. 2 minutes already feels limiting, so making it even shorter to 30-40 seconds might be frustrating for people? I'm not speaking for everyone, but I would find it to be a bit of a damper on creativity.

Though we might as well try it. But, I am in agreement with you. Ambient/Ethereal Blues is more of a song challenge.

Maybe... Now that's a catchy riff?

Indeed, the time limits can be a bit frustrating - but I reckon a shorter tune gets one to focus on the elements you want to be heard, instead of padding out things. But that's maybe a hangover from the early days when I first participated - there was a fairly strict 1min rule in effect...

I do want to a 4min song challenge soon. (submit anything, new, old, borrowed or blues)

Let's try for a hint of democracy... :?...who's keen for a mini challenge "Now that's a catchy riff"?

WELL DONE RICKYWICKY AND WERN101, SUCH A CLEVER IDEA AND EXECUTION!....AND MERON "FUNKY TOUCHE" GREAT ENTRIES!

THE TIME CONSTRAINT IS A DIFFICULT ONE, CAUSE ON THE ONE HAND IT LIMITS CREATIVITY SOMEWHAT IF IT'S TOO SHORT, BUT IT ALSO SEEMS TOO LIMIT ENTRIES WHEN IT'S TOO LONG?

MY THINKING BEHIND CATCHY RIFF WAS TO MAKE IT A 'TWO PARTER' LIKE LOOP. LOOP WAS SUCH A GREAT IDEA AND IT GOT OTHERS (WHO DIDN'T EVEN ENTER) TO TINKER AROUND WITH THE BACKTRACKS. I THINK IT WOULD BE GREAT TO ALLOW (WITH PERMISSION OF COURSE) OTHERS TO PLAY AND EXPAND ON THE RIFFS, AND TURN THOSE RIFFS INTO POSSIBLE SONGS/COMPOSITIONS.

BLUES ETHEREAL IS WONDERFUL, BUT MAYBE 'BLUES FUSION' WITH ANY OTHER GENRE TO OPEN IT UP A BIT?

MORE IDEAS TO TOSS INTO THE POT.

1. Killer Intro
2. Electric & Acoustic Together
3. Play it and Tab it!
4. Strumming only please! - PICKING WILL GET YOU BANNED!
5. Pick a musical decade!
6. Blast from the past - Merons idea about a challenge revisited! It's a brilliant idea but it
might be a bit limited to only a few, so maybe we need to modify that a too?

I think what we should vote on should be two-fold:

1. Do we do a mini challenge or another 2min song challenge?

2. And THEN, which theme. The theme will depend heavily on the time allotted us.

My vote on 1 is: 2min song challenge.

My vote on 2 is: Ethereal/Ambient blues, as mentioned previously.

Sorry Meron, I really don't mean to be a buzzkill on your idea, but I think we're presented with too many options with themes, and not many of them will really be conducive to a great quality 30-40 second composition?

Yeah, let's vote on it - I'm not fussed on what we do - as long as there's people who want to do it...

Not a worry - I agree that not all topics are do-able for the mini challenge. Fuzzilla and "Now that's a catchy riff" would work (I think?)

I think the fuzzilla one could be cool. Not everyone has a fuzz pedal, though, or the desire to buy one just for a competition.
The amp I have (Peavey Vypyr) luckily has a fuzz setting, so I COULD do it... but I'd rather even incorporate a bit of fuzz into the catchy riff theme and hit two birds with one stone, you know?

Hello good people.

I agree with Meron on 1 - a mini challenge and 2 - now that's a catchy riff. (Because I have NO idea what 'ethereal ambient blues' is.) ? And cause I don't have a fuzz pedal, nor can I recreate its sound with my limited knowledge of reaper.
