Jan 2016 Challenge Part I - Get your Jam on & Vote!

V8 · 2016-01-19T07:42:03+00:00

Thank you to all the entrants - I'm super stoked to see us chatting away in the initial challenge thread, please keep it going everyone! So when voting, I'm going to suggest you have your instrument at hand to jam along to the entrants and when casting your vote - perhaps think of not only on what you enjoy hearing, but also what you enjoyed jamming along to. Basically, cue up the track in your daw, find a loop that works and have some fun with it =D You got 5 days and 3 votes...go for it! Part II will be using these entries and hearing what you can do with it - At the moment I'm thinking...-> 1min, 4 tracks (excluding the loop you choose). Also thinking that if you don't use your own track, we can re-render the Part I entries w/o percussion so we have the flexibility of using our own rhythm section. EDIT : Added Eujean @ 09h00 19/01/2016 - I missed his entry...DOH! BEGINNER Hasie - Chillin’ in Jamaica http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Hasie.mp3 BPM: 85 Key: G Major Fender Standard Strat -> Blackstar HT-5R -> Behringer UCA 222 -> Cubase AI LE 6 (Note that ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver does not work on Windows 10 - used ASIO4ALL) Drumkit: MT Power Drummer Lu22 - Dance of the Ropefish (Part 1) http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Lu22.mp3 BPM: 150 (not entirely sure as I messed up when exporting my percussion track) Struggle, pain, struggle, acceptance. This is a very basic riff, but it should sound much better when the lead is added to it. Can't wait for the next challenge. Recorded on my ESP LTD M-10, through a Yamaha THR10 and Audacity. Drum track (yes its just a kick I suck at drums) was created in Hydrogen and imported. INTERMEDIATE Wern101 -Way Back Track http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Wern101.mp3 Track bpm: Uhm…I dunno. I Accidently deleted the media files after rendering. Luckily I had it on my phone, but I have no idea about the bpm. Between 80 and 100bpm? Ok so 40seconds was tight…mine is 45seconds…I basically used the MT Power Drum Kit with reaper and used some of the intro’s, presets and fills for the drum track. I then used power chords for the electric guitar rhythm part. The chords I used are: E5, B5, C#5 and A5. Effects used are only reverb on the guitar and drums. No 'loops' were used in the making of this backing track. First EVER drum track I did!! Stoffeltoo - It's Plastic! http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Stoffeltoo.mp3 BPM 120 ish Genre: Country rock (think CCR) I used the power drum kit with Cubase, sounded really cool! Bass recorded with Sanchez el cheapo controller through prodipe VSTi stand alone. Mix done in Audacity Eujean - Untitled self title http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Eujean.mp3 BPM: 140 This was a fun piece to do, I used my Rocksmith Cable, into Fruity Loops, and Amplitube 4. Didn't do too much mixing. The drum samples I got from a friend. This being my first challenge I think I learned a lot, but think I can learn so much more, so please point out what I should've done differently ADVANCED Tokyopop - White Lines on Cherry http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Tokyopop.mp3 BPM: 120 This is the beginning of a longer song I've started working on. A C-bebop scale should (I think) work alright with most of this, but some of it deviates from that. studmissile -Pick Up The Pieces [Backing Loop] http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/Studmissile.mp3 BPM: 100 Meron Rigas - Stick8 http://guitarforum.co.za/gfsacomps/mp3s/V8.mp3 BPM: 94 I went for a bass line, as I wanted to give my new bass a run. Since I ain't a bassist, thought it would be easiest to bang out something familiar from my old band - in which I was apparently the bass player ::). No idea on the key - it starts on C (C, D#, G#, G are the four notes I'm bouncing around). All my guitars are in storage, so no chance to jam a lead...I think F Blues might work? I don't know what comp "rules" state. I guess it will also have to be approved by the "composers" of said backtracks.

Approved. Unless I can get a Dean Razorback out of the deal, then I want a Razorback first. XD.

Stoffeltoo

What is a razorback and who is Dean?
?

Umm..you've moved onto Part II already...patience padawan ? (But don't stop thinking/planning - just give us mere mortals a chance to vote)

It'll take a Dean ML w/Dimebag lightening bolts on it. Or a BC Rich Warlock. In black. ?

Oh hell yes!

Wth? Splicing? Razorback? Warlock? Sounds like a fantasy warcraft game! All of this goes over my head. Feeling very confused.
I got the 'padawan' reference though...

Well, splicing would be taking all the tracks and merging them to make one awesome track.

The razorback and warlock are sexy pointy guitars:
Here's the Razorback:

Well the warlock is a sexy guitar...not convinced by the razorback. But I am stuck in the 80's when it comes to pointy guitars and suffer from a touch of nostalgia...a warlock was my 1st electric 8)

Had my first round of jamming (bass) to the tracks last nite. Much fun was had - two in particular were great fun, the rest I couldn't find a groove that worked for the track (says more about my bass playing than the track). Gonna dig a electric out of storage and try that over the ones I couldn't find a groove for.

wern101

Never been a fan of 'pointy' guitars. ? I love the typical 'les paul' and 'strat' shapes. Call me 'sensible'...lol.

the fact that you have to go and 'dig out' a guitar....that's just sacrilege....shame on you! ?

I am in the sticks this week...no guitar...barely internet connection. Can't even listen to the tracks again. ☹ Back on the weekend though.
There is one track in particular that caught my fancy - my head is spinning with the possibilities!!

Me thinks 'one awesome track' will be great!

I'm the total opposite - the less generic the better. While being awesome guitars, both the Stratocaster and Lp shape have been ripped off by possibly every guitar brand (especially the horribly made Chinese brands), so they lose their individuality.

True, but the sound and feel of a proper LP or Strat can cure erectile dysfunction and not poke someones eyes out in the process.

That means I must get strat then ?

wern101

Bwahahaha. Sorry to hear about your pre'dick'ament stoffeltoo. (Sincerest appologies to any mods watching)
To do list for stoffeltoo:
1 - get the strat
2 - get the girl
3 - have an awesome life

Of course, if you want tobe immune to all the effects of aging, you need the other 'caster:

Gentlemen...reallllllyyyy :?

least we forget...I put together the pimpocaster

Ahh well, I've been playing bass, it's *technically* a guitar. Albiet one with a sensible number of strings...

The embarrasing thing was trying to find a pick last night...all with the guitars in their cases!

Hasie

I haven't jammed to all the entries I want to yet. I am going to tomorrow. My left hand might end up looking like a claw at the end of, but it will be totally worth it.

What I've realised in the meantime is that I really need a decent microphone to mic my amp, or an attenuator. Using the emulated output (which occurs prior to the power amp section), discard all that power tube "colouring" and speaker+cabinet characteristics.

This challenge was really great, because it forced me to learn how to do drums in the DAW.

ME TOO!! Which is awesome. It means this forum is working. We are improving and learning new skills. i would never have known about reaper had it not been for this forum.

I have also not jammed to anything, don't know when I will either. probably only on Sunday.

I wish i had the level of skill / dedication / knowledge to build/mod my own guitars...someday..

Well done to everyone for entering and thank you to all that took the time to listen, jam and vote! :goodtimes:

I've posted up Part II - if you read through it you'll see that everyone is a winner...

But since we had votes for this one Lu22 and Eujean 'won' their respective categories with a three way tie in the advanced group. Gotta admit, I thought Tokyopop would have walked away with that one easily - I really liked his track!

Hasie

Congratulations to those who won!

Hasie

I did not get any votes really, and I would thus like some feedback regarding my entry.

Was it difficult to jam to? Is the beat to weird? etc.
I want to learn from these challenges and honest feedback/criticism will be great. If you do not want to post your criticism/feedback publicly, you can PM me.

Thanks.
