So I bought a guitar kit a couple of months ago. The body is alder and was actually factory sanded and sealed. Due to my lack of knowledge and impatience I dived in without knowing what I was doing. I wanted to do a white stain effect. I 'm not going into detail here but the result was terrible. I sanded it down again.
The second attempt was a solid color straight on the wood. It looked a bit rustic, but all and all it had a nice effect. I reckoned another coat will do the trick but that backfired somehow. The result was a skin like texture. I sanded it down again.
Now I'm sitting with a sanded down body (a bit out of shape). The initial stain absorbed into the grain in some places that are to deep to sand so I have white grain here and there. Now I'm to afraid to do anything.
I need to fill the grain properly. There are lots of tutorials on the web, but the products they refer to I have never seen or heard of. What local product can I use and how?
I think I'm going for the solid color again unless someone can give me good advise on how to get a transparent white finish.
Help please. I really don't feel like sanding it down again if I mess up.

have you considered just taking it to Wayne at BvanS guitars?
It might cost more, but in terms of your time and knowing what you get will be what you want, it might actually cost less?

Hey man, did you come right in the end? Profill worked really well for me. Got it a builders warehouse.

Thanks, I just ended up spraying it. It looks rugged but I kinda like it. I managed to sand the thing out of shape anyway so one day when i have the patience again I'll invest in a new body and start from scratch. We live we learn...
