Frustration... Four digital tuners all set to automatic/guitar/440hz.
Three green lights but the Seiko is nowhere near...
How do I explain this to my new pupil ?

Assuming the batteries are all fresh...not all tuners are equal, there's a reason the Polytune's are a bit pricey. Though perhaps the Seiko is old/damaged?

The most accurate tuner I have is a vst plugin (GT tune). And the cell app's are pretty good too. My -allegedly- accurate snark is a piece of *(^ junk in comparison.

The Seiko certainly appears to be a quality item... as opposed to the cheap Tamglewood.
The other two are added over the years and I dunno how much they cost but they're all inexpensive.
Bottom line is the three cheap tuners all give the same reading and they're the same as two others that come to band practice...
I tried all the settings on the Seiko and it just does not work for me.
I could tune the guitar to it but then we're at a different pitch when I give the youngster lessons. ???

If you want a headstock tuner just get a polytune and be happy. Those things are the shizzles.

Is the Seiko an old analogue tuner?
Measurement instruments require calibration from time to time over the years, in order to maintain accuracy, and it's possible this is true for your tuner?

I have a skanky cheapo headstock tuner and an older (expensive back in the day) Boss TU-12 (plugin & mic); the headstock works like a dream. Since I took the plunge and got my first smartphone about two years ago (Huawei P6) i have been using a free Android app. (PitchLab Pro) I have not touched my other two tuners ever since. I find Pitchlab to be very accurate and far more responsive to a finer degree of tuning. I agree with above... your skew tuner most probably needs calibrating.

The three correct tuners are mine... The Seiko came with the guitar that required strings.
It differs from mine even though I set it to 440hz.

Sounds like it needs calibrating.

It's amazing how good smart phone tuners are.
Well I suppose not really, since each of them has way more processing power than almost any digital tuner.

Besides the three tuners that are correct here, I also have a tuner built in to my Ibanez Artwood dreadnought and this too reads the same as the others. I havbe advised the client to replace the Seiko with something else.
The client's response is he bought it new at a local music shop so he has to trust it...

They do have a baby grand in the living room, so, of course I invited them to tune up the guitar and compare it to the piano :-[

Sound advice.
No such thing as nincompoop from your side. Some people find it difficult to accept facts. I hope he did not buy the baby grand at the same shop (Only joking of course)

Umm, return it and get another one?

Otherwise, skip a lesson and put the $ towards one of those cherub clip-on tuners for R100.
