So last night I was at a (near stage volume) rehearsal and all my catefully crafted bedroom tones got totally buried in the mix. Everyone agreed I had a great tone but kept on saying turn the volume up. Man I wanted to kick myself afterwards coz I made such a stupid mistake. And yes I know the theory of upping the mids etc in a live situation...but...totally forgot about it coz I haven't played live in a really long time.
Moral of the story...play live more!!! And turn down the damn reverb!!!

You shouldn't just up your miss, you should also lower your bass. When the frequencies from your guitar blend with that of bass and drums, it becomes very difficult for the ear to track the notes. That's why sometimes thin mid sounding tones on their own sound bad but live sound incredible because they cut so well.

Yeah this is what causes a lot of trouble for us bedroom (mostly) players when we start playing live. We use too much overdrive, too much time-based effects and our tone is set "too warm". The amp played by itself should sound a bit gnarly, if you want to be heard in a noisier mix.
