As you can see we have had a good response to the Latin Rock Challenge. Voting will run until midnight Sunday. You have 2 votes please cast only 1 vote per category A and B, i.e. don't vote for 2 people in the same category
Here is my Latin Rock entry(aka Latino Le Computer): http://www.box.net/shared/3jsoecobq7 This Is my first ever attempt at Latin rock but it came quite naturally. Not my best recording but I am slightly proud of myself ::) I think I fall in the Advanced category????

Here's my entry for this week. Advanced category. http://www.box.net/shared/i39uxqe50v Never really been into this kind of stuff, flamenco etc, but this was fun. It's an oldish piece that was just sitting rusting away in the back of my repertoire... yanked out, dusted off and freshened up a little. I like... even if it is a little rough. Only three tracks, all on the Squier Strat and 505II combo (acoustic patch). Mixed on Audactity Thanks

This week I did things a little different. Firstly I moved away from my recent self-imposed restriction of solo guitar for these competitions - after all, how can you really have Latin Rock without percussion? So my four instruments are percussion, bass, nylon guitar and electric guitar. The second main difference is I used my Vox AC15 for the electric guitar (the first time I have recorded it). http://ratcliffe.co.za/music/alan_latin.mp3 Recording Notes From now on, I'm going to try to include these notes with all my entries. Hopefully this will help demystify the recording process for those with an interest and also give some of our pro members the opportunity to point out where I can improve (and how). Electric Guitar I recorded the electric guitar late at night at very low volume, using my Vox Big Ben overdrive pedal "dimed" for the overdrive. Because of the low volume, the amp isn't doing much, so it's not the best example of the amp's tone and suffers a little with fizziness, but overall it's an acceptable sound. Mic is the ubiquitous SM57 pressed right up against the grille cloth, midway between the dustcap and the edge of the Celestion Blue speaker, angled in towards the dustcap at about a 15 degree angle (to soften and take the edge off). The guitar is the Sanox and the pickup was the bridge position Air Zone humbucker. Nylon guitar The nylon guitar (an Ibanez GA-100) is captured with an AKG C535 mic, which is a small diaphragm condenser mic. The mic is positioned over the 12th fret and angled slightly towards the soundhole. I often add in a large diaphragm condenser as a distant mic to get some ambience, but not this time as I wanted the guitar with a more "up front" sound. Bass guitar The bass is the neck humbucker of my Hohner Jack plugged straight into Guitar Rig with the Ampeg amp sim. Percussion The drums took more time than everything else together. I tracked the other instruments with a simple Bossanova drum loop I had to get the timing and feel. Then I programmed the actual drum and percussion part using Toontrack's EZDrummer to create the basic rhythm. I then edited the drum tracks manually to get the kit and congas locked in nicely, both together and with the other instruments. Mixing Pretty straightforward with minimal effects and EQing. Both guitars have a highpass EQ at about 120Hz to cut the lower, muddy frequencies out. Bass has a shelving high EQ to cut the frequencies above 600Hz by 6dB to leave plenty space for the guitars. The drum track has a "brickwall" peak limiter with threshold set at -1dB to catch any nasty spikes (that damn timbale!). There is one reverb bus that all the tracks are sent to. Reverb is fairly heavy on the lead guitar, but just a touch on everything else to give a bit of life and cohesiveness to the sound. The master bus has a limiter set with a threshold of -2.5dB to even out the dynamics and prevent clipping.

Hi there, I gave it a try this week. Was too impatient, I don't have any recording equipment exept my little camera. I hope that isn't too unorthodox. Don't mind being disqualified or any thing. I'm a bit embarrased to say that I'm "advanced", but I have been playing over 10 years, so I can't very well say that I'm a beginner. Happy Salsaing http://www.box.net/shared/72iqqbe0gp

Here is my entry for the week. I'm afraid it was very rushed. I did it all in less than 10 min. So there are two tracks. One rhythm and one lead. Both of them recorded on the first take, unedited. Both played on my Yamaha Nylon. http://gfsa.s3.amazonaws.com/311/Latin%20Improv-01.mp3

Here's my entry for this week... Again I'll try my luck in the beginners class. (I do have a feeling I've heard that intro somewhere before but I am not sure... :-[) 2 tracks both guitar. http://gfsa.s3.amazonaws.com/382/Latin.ogg

http://gfsa.s3.amazonaws.com/298/latency%20in%20A%20minor.mp3 Latency in A minor Takamine Acoustic using Zoom G2 pedal's drum machine

Ok I tried to refined my entry a little :) Still a hopeless entry into ubernoob class! Here: http://www.box.net/shared/32yxr2uvdu 1) A percussion track consisting out of two "latin" dance samples I had lying around. I played with them a little and composed a little mix of the two in an old producing software package. Still think I had the BPM too high, o well. I was trying to get to the sound of some of the Chad Kruger and Santana colabs. 2) Power chord thing using my Fender strat with some distortion to get it "rocky". Hehee, this bit went alright. 3) Single note fumble with the strat again. I'm still hopeless on the single note thing but ok. Everything else is sounding better. Hehehe, I think. Very impressive everybody!! I wish i could enter these weekyl challenges but alas i missed the 'heavy' challenge, and unfortunately i'm not a very versatile player ☹

I do have one suggestion for this challenge tho... would it be possible for the entries to be submitted in a way that the audio can be streamed instead of downloaded? ?

Riaan

Great entries all round! Well done guys!

I prefer as downloads - I usually listen to them a dozen times each before voting and that bandwidth would start adding up.

What I would ask is that members put their name in the title to make them easier to identify and vote for the right one.

Heath

just a suggestion , but if everyone used box.net they could either stream it , or download it , i normally prefer just to stream the box stuff .

LMinnie

The Schwartz is strong with this one!
Alan gets my vote for just knowing about Spaceballs!!! ?

I can help you out with a DivX copy if you want Alan...

"Hey! Your Schwartz is bigger than mine!" LOL!

Alan gets my vote for just knowing about Spaceballs!!!

Wrong reason, but right result ?

I can help you out with a DivX copy if you want Alan...

I'll ignore that...

Really tempting, though...

Hahahaha..yes that qualifies as one of thoooose films. The kind the girlfriend would deny me all goodness over if I rented it. No more ice cream, no more cigarettes, no more whiskey.

The solution seems simple to me - in future make sure to rather buy the movie and rent the girlfriend. ?

Heath

hhhhmm dial a girlfriend , i could become larger then lollie

My worry is the large amount of Lolly needed to maintain that habit.

AlanRatcliffe

I don't wish to know about your large lolly. ?

Squonk

Alan and Spyke ?

Is this sleep deprivation or have you two been doing a stand up course? ?

Spyke

My reputation precedes me... ?

O gits, I think you gone dunnit now! You know she particularly watches this thread. Don't worry though, I think in your dying moments you left quite a mark on the forum. Heehee...we'll leave the bloodstains too.

Spaceballs has somehow lost it's charm. It was one of those movies, when watched as a kid, gets endlessly recited till it not only stopped being funny, but you foreget why it was funny in the first place. My brothers and sister are to blame for that. Speaking of charm, incase you may not have noticed you'd talking about pimping and prostitution. Quite unsavory.

Alan, need a hand mopping up?
