Please could you help me. I have just recently bought my girlfriend a
Hiwatt 200watt guitar amp head and 400w ( 4 x 12”) speaker cabinet. When
connected, I only get the two right speakers playing and not the two on the
left?
On the back of the cabinet is two connections (one at 8ohms and one at
16ohms) and then there is a stereo / mono switch to switch from stereo to
mono.
On the head it has two outputs (which only says “minimal load total
4ohms”). It does not indicate which output is 8ohms on any particular one
of the two outputs.
At the moment I connected a single speaker cable to the cabinet to the
8ohms connection on the left and then on the left on one of the output
connections on the head – but it only plays through the speakers on the
right – not through the left two at all. I have tried to connect the
speaker cable to the connection on the right side of the two outputs on
the head but it’s still just playing the two right speakers?
Please if anyone can be of assistance, it will really be appreciated.

I would assume you have flicked the switch to mono . also check the speakers that arent working and make sure one of the connection haven't popped off . i used to get that with one of my amp until i soldered the wire one .
drummer
Hi,
Thanks. Yes, it's switched to mono - but still no success. I have spoken to a guy from MArshall Music in Cpt and he said that I need to try to run two wires down from the parallel output from the head into the two connections at the cab (8homs and the other 16 ohms) and then switch it over to stereo?. I am just scared i do that and damage the cabinet in some way? Would this be safe to do? I haven't checked the speaker soldering / connections yet..will do that as soon as I get home.

with my knowledge of amps and speakers , running at 2 seperate impedance from the same amp is never a good idea , also if i remember right one side would then be louder then the other . can someone confirm this

Geez - really had to stretch my brain on this one and I haven't had any sleep since Saturday. Have you got the cab set to 8 ohms at the moment?
I would think that for a 4X12 to give you the option between 8 and 16 ohm impedances, it would be 16 ohm drivers in two series pairs of two parallel drivers each, and it simply turns off one parallel pair to drop the impedance to 8 Ohm. In that case, to drop the impedance to four ohms, you would run the cab in stereo mode and use two cables (the two outputs on the head will be parallel connected, so you'll be effectively paralleling the two sides of the cab and geting a total impedance of 4 ohms, even though it's in stereo mode) - so the guy at the shop (Gareth?) would be right. Gee... fun...
Do you know what model amp and cab they are?
Tail0n - you can often switch impedances on an amp, but AFAIK, no amp lets you run multiple different impedances.

Hi, thank you so much for your response.
I have had some luck - i think! Well, this is what i've done. I connected the one output (right) of the head to the 16 ohms connection at the speaker cabinet and switched it over to mono and now all four speakers are playing...yeah!!! But, is this the right way of doing it? Is this safe? Or should I rather be running two cables down to the cabinet?
The head is GD200R Hiwatt and cab 4 x 12" 400Watt Maxwatt series...i've found it really difficult to find any info on this cab or head on the net.
Thanks so much for helping and giving advice thus far!

Danger! Don't run a cab of 16 ohms on a 4 ohm output. Very bad mojo and you run the risk of letting the magic smoke out of the amplifier, specifically the output tranny and the set of (expensive) power tubes.
AlanRatcliffe
BTW - I also cannot find any info on the head. Are you sure of the model number?
drummer
Hi, sorry the head info: G200 HD Hiwatt..
AlanRatcliffe
OK. The amp is a solid-state model, not valve. This is good news in that solid-state amps are a lot more tolerant of different impedances - as long as you don't go lower that the rated lowest impedance of four ohm. So if you connect the cab up with two cables as described, you'll get four ohms and the maximum output of 240W. You can also set the cab to 16 ohms mono with one cable and the amp will put out 100W.

I have been trying to phone drummer for 2 days now ?
Head - model: HiWatt G200R HD
Cab - model: HiWatt M412
I aggree with Alan, for mono you should set the cab and amp at 16 ohms.
That should do the trick, drummer if you don't get this right please give me a call!

I just had a chat with drummer.
Everything is now sorted! 10 points go to Alan :bopping:

Ooh! Thanks - but I'll try resist the temptation. LOL!

I spent about 10 years playing drums (quite badly, but I had a nice kit ?) in a band with Andrew Mac (now Flat Stanley) fronting. Ironically I took it up when my then GF gave up playing, and we had a seven piece Tama Rockstar just lurking around the place. I've recently been thinking about getting myself a Roland electronic kit for the studio. Still not sure though - I'm better at programming them than actually playing them.
