Bass Recolor

Hi fellow muso's

I recently(last week) bought a new Cort Carona 5 bass. It sounds great for its price but im not liking the black paint. Would have preferred a natural wooden finish.

Does anyone know of a place in cape town that will strip down the polly paint for me?
Ive seen some videos of this done online heatguns and the like but im really not confident enough in my own abilities as far as woodwork is concerned.

Just not worth it, unless this is the bass you'll keep for the rest of your life.

1. It's a tricky process - easy to burn the wood w/heatgun and it's a <censored> to clean up the burn marks, if at all possible.
2. You won't know the wood will look like under the paint. Likely the best looking wood is used for the OPBR finished ones.

Better just to find one in the OPBR finish.

And for a respray or whatever on an electric guitar that I've had for ages and will likely never get rid of; know of anywhere in CPT that'll do it?

I love the bugger but its so boring on the eye.

Just my opinion : Foster is usually very busy, but worth the wait & $ for a primo job. I've seen Brian's work and he's reallllly good - I also find him a pleasure to deal with. Foxy are still establishing themselves (probably the cheapest option...?), I've seen some pretty good work roll out the workshop.

I'd get a quote from each, and see how I felt about their response to the finish I wanted to get done.

Lapdawg (GFSA) might entertain refinishes - though he's got a day job, so chooses what he get's into quite carefully...if it ain't a '59 LP I'd doubt he'll be keen ?

You can also try Craig Cannon of Cannon custom guitars in Brackenfell (or Kraaibakistan as I like to call it)

Can't vouch for his work on electric, but he made a custom pick gaurd for my Cort acoustic I was quite happy with... PM me for his number if you want... ?

Thanks for the replies here...

I think i will keep this forever but really never thought of all the factors...condition of wood etc. Will probably contact one of the guys mentioned above for an idea of what to expect

Jan Tredoux at Stellenbosch Guitar Company, and Matthew and Matthias could likely refinish it for you too. But if you want it to look good, it'll likely cost more than the bass is worth...as mentioned, finishing is one of the trickier parts of building a guitar
