August Mini Challenge [VOTE]

Really impressed guys. I put you all in the same group, because I feel these challenges are less about voting, and more about developing and improving as a guitarist/musician. And to be honest, unless you are Andy McKee (go Google), then there is no need to separate categories.

Use this opportunity to comment on the tracks and provide constructive feedback and tips etc.

Okay so this is my first submission, and there's plenty wrong with it. I recorded using my ESP LTD M-10 on a Behringer GM 108 via Rocksmith Realtone Cable and Audacity.

Recording setup: Ibanez RG1550FM -> Blackstar HT-5R (Emulated output - 4x12 output) -> Behringer UCA222 -> Cubase AI.

Here is my entry. Siembamba. It would be interesting to know what the words of the nursery rhymes refer to. I think Siembamba refers to a Fiskaal but I may be mistaken. In most cases these rhymes refer to really horrible historic or cultural events

When we were in Grade 1 or Grade 2, we learned this awesome little tune. I loved it so much and, once I got into metal, I always wanted to turn some old nursery rhymes into metal numbers. Well I finally did that.

I recorded this on my BR-600. Bounced it to 1 track and manually did the panning with the sliders. It was very easy but it doesn't come out too clear. Need to practise that I suppose but I didn't wanna miss the deadline.

Sjoe - what a great set of entries. Dig the humorous ones especially, sounds like everyone had fun with this!

Really liking how the mini challenge levels the playing field between the categories, thumbs up to Adrian for throwing us into the same pool for this one.

Comments to follow - though I think everyone did a particularly great job this month.

Just download them from the links beneath the clip - might take a few attempts to get down the complete file though.

Lu22. Good recording. Great job doing vocals on your first entry as well. Liked it.

Iain, liked the style. It suited Siembamba for me. Great use of chords and tensions.

V8, I tried to, but could not hear Row in that tune. The playing is excellent though.

Norio. Really liked it. Maybe just a bit too much panning for my taste. \m/

Studmissile. Great playing, great vocals. Very well done.

Stoffeltoo. Liked it. Good playing. The silences did not bother me at all, it worked for me.

Man, this was great fun. Well done to all the participants and thank you for great entertainment.
As was said during my introspection gripe, I learnt more during the preparation for this compo than any other time.

also could'nt agree more with everyone else, well done to everyone on the entries. you guys don't mess around hey ? . really puts someone like me to shame who has yet to still enter a competition this year. am really interested to see who's going to end up taking home the oscar, lol.

Voting was interesting this month - the 2nd listen made me think!

Hansie : Dig it, metal kids everywhere approve!
Iainrossouw : Like the chord approach to the rhyme, easy to recognize
Lu22 : A fav, had a punk/core vibe that just worked.
Norio : A fav, especially the "um pah" chorus. That rocked with the panning!
Stoffeltoo : a fav, the performance got me - nicely played! Not sure what ya meant about silences, nothing sounded awkward to me?
Studmissile : Loved it at first, smooth playing & the way you sang 'tonker' - classic! But the vote made me think my other choices were more nursery rhyme - this had a more C&W esque vibe to my ears?

Thanks - yeah...rusty hands, the RH was missing the triplets I was trying to play on the melody notes. Felt more like hacking trees than playing guitars ?

Well, everyone has said everything so I am just going to say well done. Metal to country and back. Guess one has to judge on creativity in the case of these entries. Funny how unique a different approach renders on the practical side of things. 8)
