I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on this as I'm watching vids and looking for tuts online and just not getting it. I'm trying to learn a couple of songs that have slaps and notes at the same time, and I have no idea how this is supposed to work.
If you want an example, the song that I'm trying to learn is I See Fire by Ed Sheeran, using an arrangement I got from Peter Gergely (Youtube).
Are you supposed to strike the note with the top of your nail while you're slapping the bass strings with your thumb?
WHAT IS THIS MAGIC
Thanks.

If this video is the one you mean
And the bit you're talking about is from around 30-45 seconds, then it seems to me that he actually slaps that note. Sounding it by fretting it at hitting it with his thumb, whilst the rest of his thumb hits notes he's muting.
Another way you could play it, as you mentioned, is with your index finger nail on your way down.
I find the first method (to slap, but aim at a string) is pretty simple with a few hours practice.
Keen to hear where you take this ?

Thank you! I think I'll have a go at the first technique you mentioned and see how I go.

Yeah I gave this a try during my lunch break and I am pretty certain that's how he's doing it.
