Project 'Make It Sing'

Inspired by Briang's writing/recording project and the monthly challenges, I've decided to start my own personal challenge. Having not been in a band for years now, I haven't really needed to exercise any creativity as far as lead guitar work goes. I've gotten lazy with that stuff. The guitar players I always looked up to weren't necessarily the ones who were setting their fretboards on fire with speed and technicality, but rather the guys like Marty Friedman, Joe Satriani (more his earlier stuff) and even Jeff Beck who were/are great at making their guitars sing while throwing blistering runs mostly to enhance the melodies. I like solos that tell stories of their own. Little songs within the songs. So, I've decided to exercise creativity and force myself to sit down and write stuff to go over pretty basic riffs, partly just to see how rad a solo can be over something short and repetitive. I'm going to attempt to pump these out as regularly as possible, keeping the tunes fairly brief. Here are three from this past week. My favourite is It Squeeks ? I've been using the Van Halen Eruption guitar tone for the lead stuff. Please let me know what you think and also if the volume and clarity is ok. It sounds fine in my headphones but I have a feeling it could be shite from a speaker set. So far I've been recording on Audacity and with these three tunes I've compressed each track. I guess that does something...

I took my Squire Telecaster to Cash Crusaders and asked them if they'd swap it for a 5 string Cort they have in the shop (going for R1499) or just give me that exact amount of cash so that I could buy it. They're more likely to sell a Tele than a Cort bass anyway. Nope, the guy came back with an offer of R800 instead. I shot through to Guitar Centre instead and Tony (the owner) let me do a swap and now I'm the proud wielder of this might axe.

^ And yes, its bears the power of levitation.

Looks like a Ibby Sounggear Gio? Was my first "proper" bass...also bought from Uncle Tony - which I traded into with him two years later for my current one.

Really like the easy playing necks on the Soundgear stuff.

Ya gonna bring the funk for the challenge?

Last few months, I was thinking of getting another Soundgear - sooo easy to play. But I'm sticking with the ol' Hohner warhorse. As 80's as Knight Rider though :?

This month is a rock flavour - so no funk either...but a western superhero? Hmm, I'm thinking Preacher!

That is one rad looking bass. Man, Preacher is a good choice. I forgot about him. One of the coolest superhero origin stories and one of the most gruesome comics IIRC. I've gone with Vigilante from the Justice League.

"Pilgrim" ? . Yeeahhh, Preacher has some twisted story arcs - as twisted a page turner I've yet read.

Big fan of anything Ennis writes & Ellis too (Transmetropolitan).

This is just the backing track I made for a quick solo I'm just about finished with. I'm just posting in case someone feels like jamming over it. Its kind of tricky with the key changes but makes for interesting melodies.

Lol thanks guys. My own worst critic I guess.

I think I'd like to take It Squeeks, Fadeout and Kung Fu Rollerball and make full length songs out of them. I reckon the rhythm for those can make for some great vocal melodies.

I have bass lines written for this but I'd like to work on my slappin' a bit before I record it.

Sounds like you have your noise issues all sorted? - sounds very clear

Oh no its clear because I plugged it straight in rather than use the mic. I still prefer the mic because I can get the percussion sounds in there, but I've given up on that noise and this sounds alright enough.

ha ha....necessity is the mother of invention/finding a way to get around the problem
I know that it is not ideal but the recording does sound clear enough to me?

A bit of a lethargic one.

I can't seem to keep the solos from sounding almost unbearably fuzzy when played through speakers.
