A question for the builders- is 38mm thick enough for a Fender-style body? I know that the spec is 1.75 inches, but 1.5 is plentiful in the Oregon Pine I'm looking to build with- will it be thick enough to accommodate a neck route etc?

I have no experience building guitars but here are some measurements saving the experts having to run find a guitar to measure up
I measured my Fender and the thickness for the neck route is 28.6mm yours will be 20mm. I have a cort Bass guitar that has about 20mm thickness in the neck route. It is made of Agathis which is Kauri Pine. Not sure how this compares to Oregan Pine for strength.

What body style? A tele neck pocket is generally in the vicinity of 5/8" => 0.625" => 15.875 mm (that's assuming a normal tele style neck thickness).
So yeah, should be more than enough room for a neck pocket on a T-type build. Should make for a bit of nice weight savings, which shouldn't be underestimated.

Do something funky and make a neck through ?

Yeah that might be nice. Like a one piece sapele/maple through neck with some dark wood laminates, maybe two wenge strips and then pine wings onto that as the body?
Otherwise, you should still be able to do a traditional neck socket, I'm sure.
Sounds like fun ?

Heya Peter,
This is for that P-Bass project you've got going - the one that you've already got that ebanol fretboard'ed neck for?
I know Manny & Wizard recently did a P-Bass that came out pretty sweet, Wizard did the routing on that one, if he doesn't weigh in on this thread, maybe PM him for the measurements he used?

My Personal view would be that it might be Ok-ish, but if you are going to go to the effort of building, then don't settle for <1.75".
There are reasons they did it that size. If you build 38mm, you will find them out.
You could cap the blank with another piece of wood and hide it with a binding if you don't see options beyond the 38mm pine.

Thanks for the responses so far. It's for a bass, I already have a fretless neck as V8 said, so the neckthrough, while a cool idea, is not happening. I'll keep an eye open for better timber- or look at cap..

I personally don't see why you'd get into trouble on a P-bass, you only need to adjust contouring and routing depth for the controls. On a Strat, yeah, you sit with the tremolo but otherwise there's no big issues. The stroke of the bridge saddles needs to be enough to compensate but on bass bridges you normally get quite a bit anyway...

The only depth you really need is for the switches on a tele and strat.
I pushed it to the limit on my violincaster and needed to clip the terminals off the switch to make it fit.
That body is 37mm thick
?
