Like Alan said, no duty on the guitar...but the less fancy your case looks, the better.
VAT is applicable. Customs VAT calculation is:
(Invoice Value + Duty amount + 10% CAF Levy) x 14% = Customs VAT amount
CAF Levy - Currency Adjustment Factor Levy
I have three questions - any ideas?
1. How do you calculate the Duty amount? All I will have is the Invoice value charged by the overseas vendor.
2. Where can I look up the CAF Levy?
3. I there a threshold Invoice value, by law, below which no duty is added?
The questions are for gear for my other big hobby, scuba diving, but I'm hoping the same principles will apply.
Sorry i only saw this post now. Ok, since you have the invoice value, it would be advisable to check the applicable duty percentage through a freight forwarder or directly through the customs department. The customs dept.'s tel numbers are listed on the sars website.
Again, CAF levy is a standard 10% and get be verified by contacting the customs department.
Lastly, i doubt there is a threshold as SARS charges duty regardless of whether you import 1 or 1000 items (unless of course, the items, such as musical instruments, are duty free).
Unfortunately, scuba eqpt comes under a different customs tariff heading altogether and may be subject to customs duty.
Its best to check with them directly or through your forwarding agent.
