Yeah I also had to tweak the settings to get the latency to be acceptable. Lucky for me, the in-game settings were enough.
It seems you can only set the number of latency buffers in-game (1,2,3 or 4). The buffer size is by default 1024 and default number of buffers is 4. So at 48kHz that gives you 85ms latency. I set mine to 2 buffers of size 256 which should give 10ms latency. I adjusted the in-game lag compensation to match that. Feels much better.
Edit: I should add, this is on a mid 2014 13" Macbook Pro with the i5 processor and integrated Intel GPU running Yosemite 10.10.3. Your milage may vary, depending on OS and processor speed but I'm guessing most reasonably modern computers should be able to handle 5-10ms without buffer underruns (sound goes all scratchy and nasty).
