I've never learned a whole song from beginning to end. Just always got bored or something I guess.
So I got Rocksmith to fix that...
And it has BROKEN me!
It's way harder to play a song from beginning to finish than I ever imagined.
If you're like me, great at noodling but TERRIBLE at playing songs, get Rocksmith. It will break you out of your shitty habits of not finishing anything and light a fire under your arse.
I'm having fun but I must have been kidding myself if I thought I'd master some of my favourite songs quickly. Well... no time like the present to fix yourself ?

Good on you Norio! I've recently invested in a Pocket Pod, and when I put on the headphones, it shows up all my mistakes. Like you said, no time like the present to fix yourself.

Ha Ha..Norio
Is that not so true!
I tell my mates (one of them is currently learning to play the guitar under my brilliant guidance :-[) that the guy/girl playing at the restaurant/pub that you probably think sucks is actually pretty damn incredible in the grand scheme of things;
>can play a song from beginning to end (even if it is with backing tracks)
>knows a whole lot of songs
>can sing in public (for a lot of people this is terrifying)
>in some cases probably knows all the words out of his/her head and
>is a true multi-tasker (sing, play guitar, disregard distractions, listen to what is happening from the monitor.....all at the same time!!)
All the best with learning that first song from beginning to end and, if you're brave enough, a clip of the finished product when you get there, perhaps?

Thanks guys!
Dave - I found the same thing when I started recording myself. It put my flaws under a big glaring spotlight. Amazing just how much our ears compensate for how badly we play ?
Brian - So true! That was my first reaction after playing Rocksmith for 3 hours... Instant respect for any cover artist I've ever disrespected in the past. And of course even more respect for any bands I already loved.
Fiddling on your guitar by yourself is nothing compared to trying to fit inside of a song. You screw up? Keep playing sunshine, the show must go on!

It's getting a bit easier...
Here's a tip for you guys looking at getting this game.
Spend some time learning the damn colours they use for the strings.
Red is E, Yellow is A, Blue is D and so on.
There are some arcade style games in the game to help you learn these things, as well as improving actual musical things like scales, chords, etc. (Techniques too - like slides, etc.)
All in all, this game is giving me a "reason" to practise guitar. Without a teacher, it can be tough to practise daily. I just don't know what to do. This fixes that.
I've spent 4.5 hours on it in 2 days. If I keep up that average for a few months, I should see some real improvements.
Happy Norio ?

Keep going Norio!

This forum needs a damn "like" button ?
Thanks for the encouragement briang ?

This has now got my interest. Seems like a really fun way to learn lots of classic tunes. Does anyone know where to find a cheap copy? I reall would rather have a Steam version or somesuch so I can use it on my mac and my windows computer but then I need to buy their cable seperately (That is stupid but hey).
NorioDS
ez: Takealot.com will send the cable to your door for R316. Free shipping! That's how I got it. Then I bought the game on Steam.
NorioDS
And this cable inspires confidence. It's thick and "sturdy". Doesn't feel cheap in the slightest. I've heard some folks use it for recording quite reliably. That will be a future project for me.

OK. I've set up notifications for when the game drops in price. Cheapest was $14.99, I set the alert for less than $30. when that happens I'll get the cable and the digital copy.
I've heard people complain that the cable is not that reliable, some people going through a couple of them. I guess time will tell.

EZ.... im pretty sure that if you had a M-audio FastTrack or something that converts your guitar signal to USB... you can get this app going without the Real Tone Cable just saying

According to online reports you HAVE to have the cable. I have an audio interface but apparently it won't work. They say the cable acts as DRM on the software.

Like with everything in life, there's a crack for that. You can use any audio interface that you would usually use to record your instrument.

Yeah but there's also the matter of my steam account being banned which will be a sadness.

And that can only be regarded as a good thing!

Awesome!
I must say...
The riff repeater is an awesome little tool. It automatically increases speed as you hit more notes. It automatically loops the riff you're trying to improve on and you can change the "difficulty" of the section you're trying to learn based on your own skill-level.
And that's just ONE tool in this awesome little game.
Lowkey
The only thing I wish they would change is guitararcade. The difficulty jumps up to quickly for me as absolute beginner.
Ideally I want to be able to play each guitarcade games for about 15min.
I also feel like they include some difficult stuff to quickly like palm muting which I struggle with a lot. The inclusion of some really basic song would have been nice.
I would however recommend the following DLC as they are just awesome
1. Shamrock Song Pack
2. Tom Petty Song Pack
3. Bachsmith (classical stuff) but it's awesome ?
Almost forgot pick direction (up or down) would have been awesome and perhaps even note names
NorioDS
Yeah, I have to agree! Note names while learning a song would have been awesome.
And/or a game that helps you learn the notes would have been great, too.
