Okay so I got my Kontakt player 5 downloaded (5th time lucky)...
I got Reaper to "see" the Kontakt player...
And I got some way...WAY COOL samples...
Now my Korg 170s digital piano can double as a midi player. But I can't get Kontakt inside Reaper to 'see' the Korg. It sees a midi device in the usb port and I select that device...but the device doesn't play on the Kontakt player...hope that makes sense
Any help would be much appreciated

Perhaps a silly question, but how are you inserting an instance of Kontakt in Reaper?
If you double click to add a track or say 'insert new track' that will be an audio track and the various I/Os won't be set up to receive midi input.
Click 'insert' -> 'new virtual instrument track' (or whatever its called on the drop down menu.
You will then be prompted to say whether you want Reaper to automatically set up the I/O, and click yes. Your midi keyboard should then work with Kontakt.
Nitebob
From what I've seen on Youtube and how I find it is through the fx button...
:sorry:
If you add the virtual instrument track, will it open the Kontakt player automatically? Or do you then open it with the FX button?
doc-phil
When you insert a new virtual instrument it will bring up a list of instruments in your directory (same as when you click the fx button). Navigate to kontakt and click okay. The I/O will be set up and your midi controller should theoretically now work.

I tried it the way you said Doc. However the problem even starts when I plug the Korg in. The computer says it does not recognise the USB device. Then when I open a virtual instrument Reaper freezes....
When unplugging it Reaper quickly recovers....then operates normally
When I open the virtual instrument and and then plug in the Korg it plays "normally" ie...sound coming from the Korg's speakers...
Should there be a driver for the Korg?
domhatch
so under preferences -> midi things, what shows up under midi in? should be your korg. also, you should make sure midi out for the korg (or whatever device shows up here) is disabled under this same dialogue box.
more than that, i dunno. here's a tut vid i found on the choobz. i hope you find the solution, coz i'm having the same problem...

It does show USB 2.0...but doesn't identify the Korg as it does my Yamaha. But even when I select it (the USB 2.0 port) it still doesn't work right...my first thought even now is that I need a driver, but I find no mention of a driver anywhere on the net for it...let me know if you get your problem sorted Dom, meanwhile I'll have a look at the clip. Thanks for the input! ?
domhatch
didn't get a chance to look at it last nite bob. i have a midi -> usb adapter. does you gots the same? i'll have a look soon and let you know what transpires...
Nitebob
Yup...fancy name for it is a midi usb interface. I use the same...
The clip shows what seems to be the shortest route. Will try it tonight....work is really starting to interfere with what I want to do... ?

Dom can you remember which make and model USB to midi interface you have. I have a Roland UM-One but my g-sharp doesn't like mine. And all I want to do is update it's firmware. gdammit !!!!
Bob you're welcome to try mine if you want - edit: oops I just noticed you are not close by
Nitebob
Thanks Atilla...it'll be an expensive borrow hey ?
I don't think it's the interface though. I also have a Yamaha PSR which you have to switch to "external" to play midi. It's the same kinda thing.
I tried again this morning and still nothing. Thought I might be able to figure it out this weekend, but now the granny flat needs to get a dishwashing station, so this weekend is toast ☹

attila - mine is an m-audio midisport uno. i've had it for yonks, but never used it on this machine with reaper. worked a charm on the macbook. i tried to hook it up last night but, of all things, i couldn't find the power cable for the keyboard, so no progress.
bob - i'll keep trying. gotta take the little chap to swimming on saturday morning, otherwise the weekend is free to tackle problems of a musical nature. i must actually thank you for setting this challenge; finally got my a into g with reaper on my new (1.5 years old) machine.
i haven't used the technics/midisport combo for a while coz i have a line 6 kb37 wiff built-in controller. i'll let y'all know what transpires

If I get some time tonight I'll have another look. My problem isn't just in Reaper though. Even the standalone Kontakt player doesn't see the Korg. Maybe I should try the Yammie and see if it gets "seen"
L8R y'alls ?

Unrelated to your issue Bob well maybe ......
Well I got a lesson today.... Midi-101..... I borrowed Dom's midisport Uno and got the drivers loaded but the power LED on the midisport kept blinking slowly and the device never actually get to load.
I did some research it seems that some PC boards USB ports don't deliver enough juice for the midi device so it can't start up. "BINGO" i remembered that have an USB hard drive that also cant run on this PC. damn damn damn
The work around is an external powered USB hub or the double USB cable that takes power from 2 ports from the PC to feed the device.... which I don't have noga damn
EDIT: I quickly built a Y-cable and got the PC to see the Midi interface and uploaded the new firmware to the TC G-sharp ... happy as Larry thanks Dom
Nitebob
Atilla....
Think it might actually be midi interface related. Although I bought it some time ago, I've only used it once. Though I could swear it was on my current PC might've been on the previous...
Think I'm gonna take my PC to a music shop and offer to pay them to help me set up 'a' Korg SP170s as a midi device...and pay close attention.....

On a slightly different tack - some further help, please....anyone? :-[
DAW = REAPER
VSTi = Massimo Bosco DrumKit1 added in to the FX of the track used for drums
Insert a MIDI file into the track and.......no sound?
Works fine if a MIDI item is created and the drums are manually programmed??
Using GP6 for drum tracks is fine but time consuming!

Hi Brian
I downloaded it and installed it and had no problems. Inserted the new vst instrument, it defaulted to patch 1. I copied a midi track from another song and it worked fine. When you manually add midi track to it and add drums they work? It could be the track you are copying has some midi track settings in the track itself that is causing the issue such as midi out settings. midi tracks often have system exclusive/control settings at the start of the track When you click on I/O there should be <no output> in the Midi Hardware out settings.
If you like create a new song with just the drum track and email it to me. I can check if I can get it working this side. gregperkins @ mweb dot co za

Thanks for the offer Greg - will PM you if I do not come right.
In the meantime I will check the settings that you noted.
