We had one of my daughters songs produced recently and it caused quite an emotional stir ( especially among expats) with beautiful compliments on a media page on facebook.
They all seemed to love it including myself. I posted it on another musician forum and the reaction was a little different. With some positive feedback they also shared their critique . Song is dragging, vocals wobbly on low notes and a few more about how they would change certain things. Personally, we feel the producer did a beautiful job and i cannot hear the things they pointed out but im no muso that's why i would like to know if musicians listens differently.

Oh My Gosh! 8)
This song stirs emotions while listening and remembering friends and family that went off to seek opportunities elsewhere. What a voice!
You are blessed with a daughter with such talent. Nurture it and support her, she has mine.

It's definitely dragging a bit, there's no "high" point really, but overall it's not bad at all, I'm not really one that's ever paid attention to vocals/lyrics so for me my main focus is on the actual music, I guess if you're "normal" and are actually listening to the lyrics the other stuff might go unnoticed.
The only real down point to the track........Addictive Drums :-\

Impressive, some real potential there. Definitely has a voice and songwriting skill! Musicians will always listen with more of a critical ear (especially in their particular sphere of knowledge or experience), but in my opinion the draw card for mass appeal will always be a great catchy melody and complementary lyrics. I heard one tiny "suspect" wobble, and some slight drag, but overall I'm sure the majority are well deserved positive reviews.
It’s a slow song which is a real challenge for mass appeal. Does she have any songs with a more up-tempo? Ideally you want to have 3-5 various demos?

I appreciate your feedback, thank you ? She,s not into very poppy music but has many uptempo songs. Some are really good.We left it up to the producer to select the song he wanted to work with and he chose this one.
If it was financially possible we would have all her music produced at once.We are thinking of this one (below)next,..Hopefully in the next month.

Nice work - keep going, growing and learning the craft.
Plenty of resources in the modern internet age.
The answer to your question would most definitely be "yes"
And, I would say that most musicians are the most critical of their own work!

Sounds good, very good!

Treat it as constructive criticism...
While It's not flawless, it's still a good effort,
and the next recording will be even better ?

Speaking in general and not about your daughter's track, yes. Musicians definitely listen with a more critical - call it trained - ear to music. That's not necessarily a negative thing. Good, honest constructive criticism is needed to take your craft to higher levels. You quickly learn to recognize the difference between it and mere nastiness. No-one plays 100% perfectly 100% of the time and it's an impossible dream to try to achieve that, but tightening up and improving is within reach for all.
And yes - musicians tend to be their own worst critics. Some contemporary superstar autotune-empowered vocalists excepted.

Yes musicians are typically more critical listeners - by which I mean they listen much more carefully and are aware of flaws that may be inaudible to non-musicians, or just give them a "feeling" that they can't quite explain.
However, I think what you're actually referring to is dicks. Dicks are people on the internet who give a critical review when it's not asked for. If someone says "All criticism welcome!" I take it that they want to hear about weaknesses in the recording in order to grow and improve. If they just say, "Here's a song my daughter wrote and recorded!" I don't.

Guitarmom, thank you for sharing this beautiful song with the world. Kelly sounds great.
I agree with singemonkey. We need to celebrate young talent who put themselves out there.
Chabenda
Listening to it whilst working, I found it really beautiful. Sung with a beautiful voice and with real feeling. And now I'm going to play it again. Bloody well done!!

To answer the question in one word ........ YES.
Someone (may have been Gary Player) once said, and I believe this applies to everything and anything we do.....
including music: :"The harder (or more) I work at my game, the better I become...." or something like that, but
I'm sure you get the point.
All the best Kelly, keep working at it.
Nitebob
Definately more critical!
I could tell you that there was no high point etc. Because that was what was said of my first track, and I used Fruity Loops :-[
I've given up trying to please musicians. I write for my pleasure and my families, and record only Piano and guitars and the odd shaker or tambourine...things I can play...
If you check out things like this Afri-visie songwriting competition, having written some Afrikaans stuff, I entered. The song I thought was idiotic got the highest score. At the end of the day I didn't go through to the finals and at the risk of sounding like sour grapes...is this:
One of the 26 best songs out of more than 2000 entries? This was judged by musicians...I think 13 year old girls should decide what is cool...
el-guapo
It sounds like you were getting reasonably constructive criticism, although it's always in the delivery... A lot of those things could have been said in an unnecessarily unpleasant way.
I'm with Singe on the dickishness thing (thankfully doesn't seem to have happened here). I know I'm daft to expect better, but I'm constantly surprised to watch someone play something perfectly decent - but not necessarily perfect or brilliant - on YouTube, etc, and be told in the comments section that they suck, can't play, etc. But I suppose it is the equivalent of the comments section on news sites.
guitarmom
Hi All,..Thanx again for taking the time to listen and giving feedback ? I just want to share a little news with you.
This one song was enough for Sheer Publishing to offer her a music publishing contract. This is not the first time but nothing came of the other "deals" from people who showed interest. We heard Sheer is reputable but we were advised get legal advice (from them) and that is what we are currently busy doing..Thats all, ?
Have a Sheerful day ?

Great News, Best of Luck!

Great - hope that all goes smoothly!
domhatch
that's great news. i think she's great, can't really add more than what has already been said. except that lady gaga (don't shoot me for mentioning her name on the forum y'all!) started off as a staff writer and is now a highly bankable international superstarish-type person, singing and writing her own songs.
go for it and stay strong

EDIT: oh, and NEVER FORGET THE HOOK!
