Useful recording setup info for beginner/noob

I'm a fan of what Graham does at the recording revolution and this oe is a quick ad easy overview of his 300USD hoe studio, which is part one of a series.

Out of curiosity, what have you got invested in your studio?

I've got about R4700 in my basic setup (before plugins & instruments & toys)

Interface : Roland Quad Capture (R1600 used)
Mic : Rode M3 (R900 used)
DAW : Ableton Intro (free)/Reaper (R600 licensed)
Mic stand : Hercules (R220)
Cable (generic R60)
Headphones : Sennheiser HD380 Pro (R1420)

Technically the 'phones were a gift many moons ago - but I approximated their cost at the time.

I must say I agree with the concept, nowadays you can get cheap mics that sound great, not that I say it will ever compete with top end mics, but if the artist gives a good performance, it wont be lost and the untrained ear will never know when listening to the final mix.

Interface: USB Dual Pre (R550 used)
Mics: Samson C03 (R500 used) and SM58 (R600 used)
DAW: Reaper (R750, purchased last night finally...poor R/$ :/)
Studio Monitors: Tascam VL-X5 (R2600 used)
Midi Keyboard: Evolution MK-461C (R1000 used)
Headphones: Sennheiser HD202 (R400)
Mic Stands: 2 x Proel (R440)

Total spend = +-R7000 (with cables)

I'm curious how the drums will be done with one mic, how much tracking there'll be and the end result.

Nice singer/songwriter setup there! I've a midi keyboard (free) and a couple controllers, but U seldom use em (toys!)

I find this a little simplistic. Yes, you can make music on a tight budget for your recording gear, but this doesn't take into account other necessary gear like a PC for starters, instruments, cables, etc.
A decent laptop or PC will easily set you back 8k alone.

I do agree with the sentiment though which I think is that you can use a samson mic instead of a rode, or m-audio monitors instead of genelec, and you can achieve identical results with the right knowledge and skill.

If I add up all the retail prices of (nevessary) gear I've bought over the years and still own, it's probably close to 50k and I have a modest setup comprising mostly budget gear options.

Audiobox interface - 2.5k
Acoustic treatment - 8.5k

I include instruments and amps because if you don't have those, what are you going to record?

Yeah, it is a very simplistic approach. I reckon it's to get the headline "studio under $300" - he assumes you'd have a instrument & method of recording (You could even run garageband on a iphone/ipad or FL studio on a android phone). Which makes sense to me as I'd have a lappie & instrument anyways.

I am enjoying reading through peeps gear - the results you are getting are kick-ass - last challenge entry was (i'll say it again) EpIc!
