Interesting, but this just shows that the vocal phrasing, note selection and chord progression is similar (when time and pitch stretched).

I think it's completely ridiculous that Petty would get a writing credit for Sam Smith's track, and I would be embarrassed if I were him. There are probably a million unknown songs whose authors could also be given a credit.

Everything is derivative. Nothing is 100% original.
