Importing charges on a guitar

Hi There guys,

Just a quick question, if I buy a guitar off of Ebay and its a shop demo model, would I still need to pay any import charges like if I would buy a brand new instrument?

It should just be 14% vat.

No import duties, just 14% VAT
But when I was working there was a thing where you add 10% of the value on and then calculate VAT.... I don't remember what it was but just know you may pay more than 14% of the current value

Yeah, VAT is calculated on 110% of the purchase price.

How does it work though? When do you start paying? I've bought some cheaper, smaller items delivered to my PO box, so when does overseas shipping become an import? Or am I in danger of being arested for tax evasion?

You will have to pay it on delivery, either to the courier or over the counter at the post office.

They will use the invoice sent with the package, usually in dollars, convert it to Rands and charge you the VAT.

Already received and no such charges were paid. Invoice was inside the package....just lucky I guess...

As far as I understand this is only applied onto brand new items, I think ( and hope) its only the 14% VAT of purchase because its not new, instead of the 110%.
