I've been thinking recently about adding a little combo amp to the herd. The question was what to get. Haven't seen anything come up that I was interested in. On Friday I decided to give my local music store a call and see if they had anything interesting. Ian tells me they just unpacked a Marshall 1974x 18w combo, so I popped down to take a look. As luck would have it, the power went off seconds before I arrived so I couldn't try it out, but yesterday morning I took the Tele down and gave it a try. Cool amp, and really just what I was looking for, so she came home with me.

Spent a few hours yesterday trying it out. Verdict is that Marshall really did a sterling job with this reissue. It's a faithful reproduction of the old vintage amp, with a few genuine improvements, like a sturdier chassis, an impedance selector and 2 speaker jacks instead of the hard wired speaker and impedance like the original had.

Having had the privilege of trying out an original vintage one, the reissue is remarkably close sounding. Almost indistinguishable. This morning I decided to roll some NOS preamp tubes through her and while she sounded brilliant with the new production tubes, again I am sold on just how much better absolutely any amp I have encountered sounds with NOS tubes, if you are prepared to try out a bunch to find the ones that suit the particular amps voice.

So, there you have it. The perfect complement to my existing trinity of amps.
