I'm thinking of getting formal education. Anyone here who have experience with Rock School South Africa? I could go to a tutor but want the papers as well.
Are there any other alternatives in South Africa? I'm in Cape Town. Thanks in advance for advice.

Hi,
What are your aims with getting a formal education?

Good question. I can think of a number of reasons. I'm pretty much self-taught and had a brief spell with a jazz-funk music teacher. Mostly though I have picked up bits and pieces to craft my own style. Now I want to zone in on one or two particular styles but want to do it in am organized structured manner.
A formal program will also save me time as it would be presented in a scalable fashion, goimg from basic, to intermediate, to advance in a structured manner.
I have also seen the value directly from friends who have entered into formal education programmes. The formal training is a way to accalerate learning. The guys around me are learning stuff in a short space of time that would have taken them a lot of time to figure it out on their own.
Finally, it would look pretty good on my CV when I apply for studio work (long-term goal) I suppose.

Nothing beats proper schooling. They hammer in the basics which other self-taught tend to forget or loose over time. Music is an organised thing and one should learn in an organized manner which makes life much easier later on. m2cw

If your playing is what you care about you will be much better off learning in a one on one situation. Papers from an unaccredited institution mean very little if anything, so the question is also what kind of papers your money and time are buying. Most certificates are useless.
