Apparently this guy is the shit. Anyone a fan? If so, what you recommend i start listening to 1st from his stuff?

Squonk wrote Scott Henderson is actually quite good. I also desperately tried to get into his music, but battled at first. took me about 10 years to get it.
Have you had a listen to Vital Tech Tones with Victor Wooten on bass.

I love his playing (reminds me a lot of Jeff beck, but with a wider range of styles), just don't like the more vocal oriented stuff he seems to have on his newer albums.

Thanks. I'll give that one a try. I also know he was first in a duo called Tribal Tech, but I don't know their stuff.

I know exactly what you mean about the whole dirivitive (wrong spelling) thing...I have a cd by a guy named Corbin King and you would swear that he's a slightly more interesting version of yngwie, not much more just slightly....

Lately I've been getting into or at least trying to get into new things and I've found two bands that are really sticking out for me at the moment are Meshuggah and Opeth, both technically interesting but not normally everyone's thing, not saying you have to but there's no harm in checking them out. Opeth might be more likely to "tickle" your fancy though, lovely woody guitar tones and interesting diminished progression followed by a vocalist with very nice timbre and a more interesting approach to vocal melody than most, mainly in their soft stuff though their heavy stuff I'm not so loving towards :?

+1 on the Opeth. Diversity is what it's all about. One song has serious heavy guitarwork while other like Closure or Face of Malinda are much smoother [and about all of the Damnation album]

Ok so i listened to Govan last night. Actually,I watched some videos. Crazy crazy stuff. Eye opening. A true technician and fluid in so many style, brilliant. I wouldn't mind a few workshops with him! I stress how fluid he was moving around the guitar, really natural and effortless.

Having said that, he will never be in my top 3, i'm more into the chunky guitar playing with more feel, and guitarists with a bluesier approach. Sure, they cant touch him on ability, but feel and melody are different. Think SRV meets Gilmore, if that's possible. Now, before you shoot me down and say Govan can play anything these guys bring out, there have been many painters who can paint the Mona Lisa identically- its about the originality.

I wouldnt mind a 1/50000 of his skill though
