yep we forget that most of the tones we rate so highly as guitarists...are from the early years where there was a tube amp with tube spring reverb ..fuzz pedals and then a cable to the guitar which also was usually either a Gibson /rickenbacker or fender not outa choice but just there was so few choices at pro level ....
and then it's the player not the gear that set them apart .... and gets the tone
there's a turn of phrase on a jazz forum i frequent which goes... "more time on the instrument" which is bandied about when people get too into the gear ,
so yes i agree we get way too hung up on gear .... and feature.... clever marketing on companies that just wanna sell more gear ...
