Some days your guitar just sounds wrong

So it happens to me alot... Like last night, I was playing and having an awesome time with my tone being exactly what I want it to be... This morning I get up and pick up the same guitar, using the same amp and suddenly it doesn't sound right anymore. My fingers get the notes right, but the tone is just lacking... So I swop to another guitar and amp and we're back in black 8)

Lol this happens to me when i pick up any other guitar... then i pick up my number one and were truckin!

I remember checking into this and there seems to be some neuroscience/psychology behind why sound sounds better at night, it had to do with circadian rhythms and chemicals etc etc and the fact that by night time your ears have taken a beating all day so they're generally a bit more closed up and desensitized and the fact that at night you're generally more relaxed/sleepy so you don't notice the bad sound as much, whereas in the morning with a fresh set of well rested ears and brain you hear it more for what it is.

So it's probably not so much that your sound sounded good last night, it probably sounded as bad as it did in this morning you just didn't notice it.

Same thing as picking up your "favourite" guitar, with placebo power your brain will literally hear/experience it as being better.

Perception of sound is heavily affected by state of mind. Since our mind is doing the perceiving.

Applies to all senses. Depression alters colour perception. When feeling down you really DO see more blue. Even inspired the name of a music genre.

I swear there are days I really think I play like a complete idiot and the tone and guitar sucks hind tit and then an hour later everything may be just awesome. I agree totally that your mood and mindset as well as energy around you influences everything, just as humidity affects sound, ask any sound engineer. I played with a keyboard player once who would sometimes remark "damn sunspots again" when our unaltered sound (mixer settings) in the SAME venue we played in the night before, which was awesome, sounded crap the following night lol. There is no getting away from this phenomena, there is but one thing to do- NEVER EVER give up your guitar because like with everything there are lulls and peaks and its the lulls you need to conquer knowing your gonna have more peaks to look forward to ?
