I think a Banjolin may require it to be tuned mandolin style, Ukelele Banjo (Or Banjolele) is tuned Uke style. I played one from when I was 8, my mom before that and my maternal grandfather prior to her. I've actually got a George Formby lying around somewhere around the house. I even have old Alfred books written specifically for it.
For what it's worth, as far as I'm concerned it may be one of the most piercing, annoying instruments ever made. All the projection of a banjo without any of the sweetness of a ukelele, but guitar compatible chords with that silly octave up low string.
