looking for SX strat

Hey guys

I am looking for a SX strat. either the sst62 or sst57 model. If anyone has one to sell(or give away ? ) let me know..

Hi TMTW,
theyre quite common on GT and in pawn shops. Saw one on Sunday in Queenswood at Cash Crusaders, for example. (Cant recall the price...) Whats the difference between the two? How will I know a guitar in a shop is one of the two you're looking for, in other words?

Here is how I understand. Both are vintage strat models. The 57 with maple neck and the 62 with rose wood. This is the best guitar to mod cause its real cheap, the pickups are surprisingly good, neck is leke(after redress) and with some work you can have a great gigging guitar. But it cheap so if it falls, chips or what ever.. you dont care and fix it or just get a new one.

I am currently playing my friends and its great. If you want I can list the things he has done..

I was just of to queenswood to go and see if they still have some at the cash crusaders. But alas, like an idiot, I fell down with my motorcycle. So I came home to help my wounds(and ego heal) with some guitar forum. :'(

I played with the hotroded sx in band setup yesterday in its awesome. I know it will never be the fender I want. but if you only have 2 grand, and is willing to work on it a bit. Its a must do.

I plan to do the following:

1. buy SX (preferably one with nice neck).
2. fret redress.
3. pot the pickups
4. change electronics for better ones.
5. upgrade nut.
6. change middle pup tone control to bridge.
7. Ad switch to give neck and bridge, and all 3 together (in parallel).
8. General setup.

Later on I will explore diff pickup selections, especially neck and bridge in series. redo the paint job, get better tuners and saddles.

I used to be a cyclist, but i constantly got flat tires.(a lot more than average). so I constantly found myself walking my bike. So the name comes from the man that walks his bicycle. :?

Hey, I know how you feel RE: falling off a motorcycle, except the last time I did it I was doing around 100Kph. And yes, tar does burn, especially when you slide up the road on it at speed. Diesel on the road is definitely not a bike rider's friend! My leg was bandaged and I was limping for over a month but I still played in my band, just didn't do much dancing around for a while! I commute with my bike everyday. It's much easier through the traffic and I've had no problems for the past two years (besides car drivers of limited intelligence getting in the way ?). ?

As for the SX Strat, go to Marshall Music in Woodmead. I was there the other day and saw quite a few SX guitars including maybe 5 strats (one had P-90 soapbars on it, which was rather interesting). 011 804 1362

Jan Blohm, Afrikaans blues singer, started out on SXs and swore by them until he could afford good Fenders.

BTW: Your number 7: You dont have to add an extra switch. A guy I know changed my one pot to a push-pull pot with which I can activate the neck pup. If I pull it out and then play around with the blade switch, I get different settings. It has 7 combos in all now. Although its useless to use all 3 pickups at the same time. They cancel each other out and the overall sound becomes almost like an acoustic and very weak.

@ Mr M. ouch. mine was more like lets fall over as hard as you can at 10km/h :-[

@ Matt. I sow one of those switches and they are not to expensive, so might do that instead. Or what ever, its an sx. I can do what ever i like ? I saw a mod where a guy added another 5 way switch and got to these extra options while using the second switch.

Position 1: Pass through to standard switch.
2. Neck and bridge in parallel.
3. Middle and bridge in series.
4. Neck and bridge in series.
5. Neck and bridge in series and out of phase.

might be exsessive... but hay. I am going to try all and then keep what I like and fine a way to keep the switching easy.

Yup, good advice - I have an S1 switch doing that exact job on one of mine. You can also do it using a "no-load" pot in the place of your second tone (you make your first tone a master tone - which also means you have tone control on all pickup settings, unlike stock). The pot lets you blend in as much of the neck pickup as you like.

Although its useless to use all 3 pickups at the same time.

I've done this a lot and it depends on the pickups - if you have a very hot bridge pickup it doesn't work. It works if all three pickups have matched coils (or close - you set balanced levels by adjusting pickup heights). You can go a notch hotter on the bridge and it still works well. The "all three" tone is an unusual one - you have the "Quack" of multi-pickup settings, but nicely balanced tonally. It doesn't cut through as well as a single pickup, but has a bit more of a natural compression to it that makes a rhythm guitar sit nicely in a mix.

That sounds like a phase issue to me - you should get some notches from the comb filtering effect, but overall the tone should be quite balanced and be about the same as your 'tween settings.

Good to know there's more than one biker on GFSA! And yeah, my guitar hands are just fine - always wear good gloves if you value your hands IMO.

Was at Marshall again today and they only had the SX Strat with P-90s and a Rosewood fingerboard (SST62 P-90 I think it's called). None of the normal 3 single coil versions.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Bullet is ok for beginners as Alan said.

I have a Standard that I'm fairly happy with (as I grow I need something a little more complete) and the Affinity Series seems ok too, not too sure about their electronics though - the Standard has harsh Alnico singles in it.

I wouldn't go for a Squier Bullet or Affinity, I have a Standard Series Tele and I'm very happy with it, the lower models are a tad too crappy if you ask me though, fine for a beginner as in REAL beginner, but I'd rather get a Standard
