1983 Westone Concorde Bass

I have been offered a 1983 Westone Concorde 1 Bass as a swap for my Yamaha RGX see (http://www.guitarforum.co.za/classifieds/?sa=view;id=4838)

Single Hard Puncher I pickup, single vol and tone controls, 32.25" scale 21 frets, plastic nut. Solid Alder body, Hard Maple neck and fingerboard.

Is this a good bass/option.

Westone are/were a cheap Japanese make from the 70's/80's and a little into the 90's, and whilst they made some reasonable basses, they were pretty inconsistent in my experience, despite their reputation from being from the famed Japanese factory.

Personally, I would say that your Yamaha is worth more than the Westone. I see the Westone is advertised on GT at the moment for R1650. I believe this Johann is formally of JT Musical instruments that used to be in Pinelands? So the dude is reputable so to speak, but I just don't think this is a fair trade?

In its own right, its a reasonable bass to get started with, but its not going to last you long before you need an upgrade if you start taking bass more seriously. I'd say you would be better off trying to get an Ibanez Sound gear SR bass as a trade. They are great basses to get started on, and can do you for a good long while, even up to the point of taking bass super seriously.

Made in the legendary Matsumoku factory in Japan in the '80s. Well made, good woods, but a relatively inexpensive bass. The Matsu instruments are almost always worth fixing up and upgrading.

Provided there's nothing wrong with it (check for neck twist and fret wear), it's a simple, but solid bass (like the P-Bass it's modelled on) and IMO, worth the trade. Then again, I'm one of those who think if you can't do it on a P-Bass, you can't do it. Fancier through-necks with active pickups are more expensive, but depending on the application, not necessarily better.

Ok I will at least go have a look at it.

I need it purely for home recording purposes. Don't have an amp at the moment but my Focusrite Scarlet 18i6 has two DI inputs for instruments.

Hey man ive personally played this specific bass , it belongs to a friend of mine... and its one of the best feeling instruments ive had the privilege to play. i can guarantee you would feel the same. Go visit him, it's worth the trip.

My bassman uses a Westone - Solid??? Bet your butt it is, I bent down to pick up a wad of USD that a fan threw, (ok it was my beer) and as I came up I caught the head stock directly in the middle of my forehead as he swung around. I have a dent in the skull to this day.
