Also, what sound card do you have?
+2 for tweaking a install, a bit of a pain to get everything consistently working! No experience with Vista (not read much positive about it), though I'd also recommend Win7 over Vista.

Just a thought - can you get your lappie's onboard audio to work with Asio4All? Tests that the software installation(s) work, then try & get the external interface working?
