Help Please Laptop woes

I do not know enough computers to sound techie or geeky but here is my problem.

I bought a second hand laptop which came with Vista.

It has intel core 2 duo CPU, 3 gig ram and is a 32 bit OS

I now want to use this PC for making my recording studio more mobile and relocate my desktop to the house for access for other users as well.

My problem is this.
I can load my recording DAW softwares but most do not work or is not compatible with my USB desk and external soundcard, also USB. I loaded Asio4all and still find that it does not recognise the USB inputs.

Grrrr! I can record on Audacity but it is a bit of a let down due to limited and sometimes k@kish effects. Multi tracking like that of Cubase is still beyond my understanding of a solution.

Vista is known to cause many incompatibility problems. I'm not saying that upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 will fix it but it has a good chance of it and will provide a much better experience anyway.

I would also upgrade to windows 7. Vista is the Windows 8 of later day, they tried stuff that never worked, Windows 10, here we come!

Also, what sound card do you have?

+2 for tweaking a install, a bit of a pain to get everything consistently working! No experience with Vista (not read much positive about it), though I'd also recommend Win7 over Vista.

Just a thought - can you get your lappie's onboard audio to work with Asio4All? Tests that the software installation(s) work, then try & get the external interface working?
