Goochy is a monster guitar player...and super tasteful too.
He bought himself a nice acoustic a few months back, and (no surprises) is writing incredible acoustic stuff too.
Interestingly, Kyle Williams who plays drums in Poverty is also an excellent acoustic guitar player. His mind can work in poly-rhythms like no one else I know. Even tho I am no drummer, he would make my local heroes list (along with the rest of Poverty, actually).
Tony and Steve are solid choices too. I am lucky enough to experience my own private Tony show once a week. A few weeks after I started going to Tony for lessons, I got to his house and Steve was there too. They'd both just been chilling and jamming by the pool all day. I'm not sure why, but it made me really happy that those two hang out like that.
As for other local heroes, New Academics were (in my humble opinion) one of the best bands in the world. I honestly feel that (given the opportunity) both The Apple and City of strange would have been suitable candidates for album of the year Grammy awards. I know that's all fantasy, but seriously, these albums are incredible... and Dave Baudains is now playing some super tasty acoustic stuff too.
cool!! he (goochy) bought my KP3 and Synthesizer from me awhile back

As an outsider coming in from Foriegn lands, I can't say that I have any SA 'Idols' as such, but then again, I don't have any idols internationally either. Tree63 were probably the biggest SA influence on me in my 20's, before moving here, though having said that, since being here for the past decade, a few names have repeatedly impressed me and broadened my scope. Those would be John Ellis (Tree63 again), Just Jinger (particularly Ard Matthews), Johnny Clegg, and to a certain extent, Natasha Meister (incredibly hard working girl!). Having also spent a weekend with the guys of Prime Circle, both on and off the stage, I developed a respect for them too, having prior to that weekend heard very little about them or any of their music. Great bunch of guys who are very down to earth, unlike a certain other band (that shall remain nameless) we performed with who I respected a lot up until that weekend!
SO, I guess quite a list for an 'alien'! ?

G!

Well... My "local" idols are a little more "local" for me... since I know them personally ? and they are from the Vaal.

I dig their energy on stage.
The other band is no longer a band unfortunately.

Used to support them when they played live. Used one of their songs as the opening dance at my wedding.

I forgot one of the most influential bands from RSA that influenced me hugely in the early 80's.
The Asylum Kids. They had a great energy live. Robbie Robb was the guitarist.
Another local musician that hardly gets mentioned these days is Larry Amos. I saw him a couple of times in the 70's with Baxtop. Then in the late 90's I was visiting the Rosebank Mall flea market and there was Larry playing a Ibanez Strat copy with a pickup missing and one of the tuners missing, he was tuning the guitar with pliers! What a great player!
Another player that I noticed in the 80's was Jethro Butow, don't hear much from him these days!

As a bass player, Dominic Vorster from Displeased Disfigurement and Bleeding Spawn.

Ja you know, Larry Amos and Baxtop just about the best thing since bubblegum. And Asylum Kids were so nice to listen to and go see from time to time. but who the hell calls a band displeased disfugurement. or bleeding spawn.

Or wasd? And then ther just has to be the people who dont feature. When I was young, very young, we used to go to Bapsfontein on Sunday afternoons to look for chicks. And there would be these okes in cowboy kit and so forth playing Harmonicas and Jew's harps and all and every so often, you could see a guy playing a guitar or some other instrument so bloody well you cant believe. I worked in the woodwind section at Melody's when I was a kid and I used to hang with this guy with a pageboy hairstyle and a zapata moustache. And HEEEEELLLL! He played guitar like nobody i ever heard on the radio hey. Does this count as a music hero?

I believe so yes :yup:
My uncle was a boerie guitarist, that is prolly where I got my first love of the instrument.
in 1971 I was playing air guitar in front of the radio at the tender age of 7
So sorry to the youngsters out there, air guitar was invented looong before 2005
Rocker-Gramps
Dan Patlansky is my choice, aiming to join them soon with the guitar workshop weekend at Clarence.

Ard Matthews, grew up on it, his latest live performances that I've seen have been amazing... As always for me, a combination of lyrics, playing, and voice
