Just for laughs I thought I'd post a recording I did some 4 years ago. It was done on the stage of a church, so the drums were in a drumcage, piano stage left.

Recorded on a Digi002 with the following mics:
Shure SM57's
Shure Beta52
AKG C1000
CAD (can't remember the model name)
Shure SM58's
Studio Projects C1

We did about 7 songs in that afternoon, then afterwards I TRIED to overdub bass and guit at home.. But.. now we all see why I shouldnt play guit. BTW, I didnt play the drums..

So even we who do it for a living can make huge recording mistakes, rush through mic placements and generaly do a shoddy job :-[

It's not as bad as you think. Your drum miking is iffy and the mix is a bit off kilter, but the guitars are nice sounding. I've heard worse from some studios. I'd have probably brought the acoustic (very nice acoustic sound, BTW) forward and brought the electrics down around it at a lower level than they are now. Built in reverb on the keys?

Is that a Pearl Export kit? The snare sounds like it, but it could be the overheads (which seem a bit harsh at times). The Beta 52 has a bit too much crunch and not enough body (I used one for years and had the same problem with it - always wished I'd rather gone for a D112).

In short, I think you are going to have a lot of guys around here saying "If that's his bad, what does he think about my recordings?" (including me) ?

Well ... I think it may have exactly the opposite effect.
If that is defined to be bad, and that guitar is defined to be the worst ... then it's the most depressing news that I, as a newbie, can hear.
Instead of lowering the bar, it's just raised it ...

Neps - the one thing you really really need to work on is your delivery, you need a little bit of bravado. You should be saying "This is a great little recording we knocked together one afternoon - what do you think - aint it swell?"

If you produce a fairly credible piece of music and you go "well yeah I'm not worthy and this recording really sucks". People listen to the recording and think "Well I don't know what wrong with it, he seems to know his stuff, what do I know, I should agree with him - yeah it really sucks."

Hahaha.. I had huge problems with the overheads.. the drum cage was bouncing everything back, and it didnt help that the kit was under a low ceiling. The kit is actualy a well tuned Sonor, but I just popped on the mics and hoped for the best. The mix is dodgy as hell, balance is all out, and mixed in the living room at home that didnt help at all. My monitoring at the time was quite bad.

Alan.. Acoustic was actualy a cheap Washburn mic'd up with the CAD mic. Piano's reverb was the room and the inside of the piano itself, nothing else, and I still think it sounds to muddy, but I couldnt open the lid too faar for fear of drum spill.

lol.. Im a bit of a perfectionist, and listning to more recent stuff I must be honest that I've grown a lot since then. But I tend to be a bit over critical with myself.. If its not perfect its bad.

What was nice though is that we did 2 recordings, for 2 short albums for the church, and they loved it, and me sitting there listning to the stuff cringed everytime I heard it.. But it worked for what it was intended for which is what is the saving grace.

Sounds very good. Taking into account the recording situation it is very good. Drums, especially the hats far too loud. You can fix that easy with eq on the drum track. Guitars recorded nicely.

Composition and arrangement wise, it is falling flat. This is just a backing track for much more. It needs either vocals or a killer guitar solo to make it work. Plus it needs some guitar fill overdubs.

There is a version with Vocals on it.. But that I'll NEVER post.. It was one of those 'oh.. Johann does this for a living, let s con him to record something..' whic, looking back, wasnt TOO bad, but not close to being good enough.. :sorry:

Other than that.. Well, I'm working on something else at the moment, and will hopefully be able to post here what a real studio can do to your sound.

I don't know if Neps will agree with me here, but I hate trying to "fix it in the mix" - especially the drums. I usually find that corrective EQ ends up bringing out other undesirable gremlins, and fixing ends up being a bit of a balancing act in which you can only do so much. You can improve things, but rarely can you really fix them. Generally, I'd much rather go back and rerecord if possible.

I agree 100%!! One can try and EQ a bit.. but you never end up getting it right, and the balance and phase relationship also then starts to get in the way.. So in the words of a well known ad 'be wise.. be RECORD-wise'.. sorry thats just lame..
