this is directed to Alan, and then anyone who has the tech knowledge.....
Alan when we talked about reducing the weight on my Crate Taxi 30 W for travelling purposes.... you suggested the lightweight emminence acoustic speaker..... which only weighs 1.5 kg
my question is my amp is a 30 w amp and i see the speaker you suggested is either 100 or 150 W w rating will this have any effect on my amp.... as i don't want to over heat it by having it drive harder than it needs to...also it has the battery option and i don't wanna deplete the battery by the bigger speaker somehow needing more power to drive it...or am i being totally off the mark.... heheh
Alan your guidance as the amp guru is required?????
peace and love to you all

Keira I speak under correction here but I do believe that the speaker will only play the signal strength that is delivered to it..ie. 30W's going to a 100W speaker is still only going to sound like 30W..The speaker will only play what is given to it...It shouldnt drain battery power prematurely (i think?)
Alan? :sorry:

+1 on Lawrence's answer - that's also the way I understand it, wrt battery power and 30w only sounding like 30w.
But coming from the car audio side it's known that the closer you can get the power to the speakers (RMS) rating the better the performance. Provided were sticking to RMS figures and not mixing PMPO and RMS.

No, it's fine Keira - as long as the impedance (in ohms) is the same and it has at least the same power handling (or better, as in this case), you're fine.
There is one case where a speaker will drain more power (with a transistor amp) - when the speaker impedance is lower than the original, the amp tries to increase the power output and drains more power doing so.

One more, often overlooked, fact on these matters (not specifically for Keira but for anyone interested): The power rating of speakers normally only tells us how much power of a certain sine wave frequency (usually 1000Hz unless the speaker is not very good at doing that) the thing can handle thermally over a prolonged period of time. For instance with bass speakers you have to look closely what the rating actually says, because you might have to put a 200W in a 100W amp.
NB transistor amps usually produce less power on the output than their rating suggests because of the large amount of negative feedback in the output stage.

I also checked the specs. Both speakers are rated at 8ohms. The Eminence Acoustinator has a sensitivity rating of 94.5 db/W/m which is above average. This means the speaker is highly efficient and may even sound louder to certain ears than the original speaker. The Neodymium magnet also helps keep mass down whilst being extremely efficient and just think how smooth that hemp coneTM is gonna sound ?

thanks guys.... for the input....
and this mod is only for the weight .... since the original speaker ...not sure what it is...sounds awesome.... and the most natural sound for my flamenco guitar ....truly ...since i have a powered 150W extension speaker to help spread the sound when i gig .... and the sound from just the amp is streets ahead of the powered PA speaker and they both 8 inch .. so go figure...and yes of course the powered speaker is louder heheheh
so i must just check that this amp does not have a 4 ohm speaker.... in it ????
and if it's an 8 ohm i will 1st weigh my existing speaker and make the mod....
i know i said it before but this amp is the biz for acoustic players ...heheh and battery driven if needed.... i have now used the rechargable battery for almost a solid 6 hours.... trying to deliberately run it down.... but still going strong manual says about 8 hours ... so yeah tonights gig was 4 hours on battery power...
gotta love this baby..... now ust to make it a kilo or 2 lighter .....
thanks again all
very wise men out there with their tech knowledge

The Eminence NH2008's magnet weighs in at 4oz (around 113 grams) so that should help your back ?
I checked the specs of your amp. The installed 8" woofer is 8 ohms. I assume that you are retaining the 2" (also 8 ohms ?) piezo tweeter?
Keira-WitherKay
yes Graeme the tweeter works great with the excisting speaker so will keep it for sure....
also btw i saw that the Taxi 30 E came out with a polymer case and not wood as in my amp...and the weight was only 7.5 kg not the 11 odd mine is.... and here's the good news and a PLUS FOR CRATE i emailed their support division and asked if the polymer cases perhaps were still available or i could purchase one from them and do a "transplant" and within 24 hrs i got a reply explaining how they discontinued the polmer cases as they cracked and have returned to making the new 15W and 50 W models out of wood.... not the answer i was hoping for .... but i was surprised at the swift responce and very polite and concise.... and especially on an odd request like mine....
WELL DONE CRATE ...... 10 /10 in my books.... for service
peace and light
