LooneyAtTheGate Great that you got an 8 String! The scale length on this guitar is short though compared to other 8s, so it will feel a bit floppy. I suggest you use thin strings (68 to 74 guage on the lowest string) and don't push too hard when fretting. Experiment with standard tuning (F#BEADGBE) and drop-E (EBEADGBE). ?

LooneyAtTheGate Alan Ratcliffe wrote Wouldn't you go heavier for a shorter scale to up the tension? I thought so too, but when I used heavier strings I had intonation problems on the first 3 frets. A lighter string seems more controllable when fretting and actually less muddy sounding. That's just from what I experienced though.
Malkav There's a whole lot of things about 8 strings and going to decent gauges, it's all just a balancing act. Julian, your nut probably needed to be cut, the locking ones they use are only really designed to go up to a .074 or something like that. I use a .080 for my 8 string and I have no problems intonation wise, I'd really like to go up a gauge or two, but that'll require lots of modification that I'm not willing to go through. I think the biggest problems facing ERGs tend to be the variety of scales make it difficult to get a standardised string set going, which means non standard tapers. I tried restringing one of these JS-32 8 strings before and very quickly discovered that in order to get an 8th string on that makes any sense tension wise with it's 26.5" scale would require modifying the actual machinehead, and that is just too much effort. The other big problem with the higher gauges is that they tend to be compound wound, the only brand I've found that made a .079 which wasn't compound wound I didn't actually like, and had to import which is an annoying process.
LooneyAtTheGate Yes I've done a lot of experimenting.. For strings that are too thick I've unwound the ends to tie it to the machine head, and even used bass strings. I'm happy with a standard .74 at the moment on my 8. Good advice, Chad ?
ArieRS265 Daaaaaamn 8 String is VERY VERY hard to play..def not for me ☹ Guess I prefer my 6 strings more when it comes to jamming...
LooneyAtTheGate Nooo!! Don't give up yet, give it a couple of months at least! Go watch some tutorial vids, like the Tosin Abasi lessons. Find an 8 string song and learn it.
