Where do I get strings?

I have moved to Lombardy East In Jozi which is near to Edenvale. My closest music store seems to be Sound Select which is a small shop in Stone Ridge. I went in there when I arrived here, introduced myself as a pro-muso and inquired after my brand of strings, which is Ernie Ball Nylon Black and Silver. They didn't have them but said they would get them in. After two more visits to the store, their last comment was that they could get them in but I would have to pay 50% upfront. (This 6 months down the line). I walked out the store.

BTW, On every occasion that I have visited I have never seen a customer in the store!

Does anybody know of a store close to my area?

You could try Marshall Music in Woodmead... They are up the N3 -> M1 south -> Right off woodmead drive.

Or music connection on Jan Smuts avenue

Anything else becomes more of a trek, although TOMS Sandton is maybe a bit closer than Music Connection

I have to drive poop far to get strings... The closest ok shop (it's tiny) is 15km away...I stay in Vereeniging... eish.
Although...My last set of strings I went 13000km for... lol... got em when I was visiting London.

Softies! [/monty_python] My drive is about 350 km round-trip. May explain why I buy in bulk once a year or so (which also helps me negotiate a good price).

Yeah guys... but when you live in the metropolis of Jozi you expect a music shop to be reasonably close by.

Heish, you'd think there'd be some upside to living in Jozi... :?

Seriously though, isn't it possible to chat to someone at music connection (or similar) and just get them posted to you? Postage would be reasonable and if you got 3-6 sets it would definitely be worth it vs time, petrol + parking expenses?

Sure I saw a thread on GFSA about mail order strings a while ago...?

Theres mercury music in greenstone center which a fewyears ago was respectable.. then plus 1 on musicmate parklane. Otherwise a 15km drive to marshall music at woodmead would sort you out..

Alas.. in joeys, 40kms 1way is quick and considered short ?

I phoned Musicmate in Parkwood, about 10 minutes away from me by car. None in stock... phoned me back within 10 minutes with a price and an expected 3 day availability date because of stock coming from Cape Town. Will phone me when stocks arrive. Dealt with guy called Glen and I liked his can-do attitude. I'll do business with them.

I go to Greenstone quite frequently and have not come across this store or any other music store there.

Shop called is Music Connection (the one you got a bad experience from). There is no other music instrument shop in Greenstone. Strangely I get very good service from them. Note they are young chaps running the show there. Next time you want something ask them to phone immediately rather then waiting for them to do something and come back to you.

Hi, welcome to the area.

There seems to be some confusion re stores close to you, hope the following helps:
There is no one in Greenstone, Sound Select is next door in Stoneridge center.
Mercury Music moved to 8th Ave Edenvale but they concentrate on online business and don't hold much stock.
There is a Music Mate in Park Meadows across from Eastgate Mall. That's where you spoke to Glen.
Marshall Music in Woodmead.
In Boksburg there is Lovemore Music, Music Centre and Music Mate as mentioned in a post above.
Music Connection in Craighall Park
Toms will be opening in Rivonia soon

Plenty of options

The shop I went to is called Sound Select in Stone Ridge Shopping Centre... and yes it is run by two young guys and a third guy who looks after the DJ market.

After the 4th time of going to the store to try to get my brand of strings, I did ask them to phone the supplier while I was there. After that they quoted me but said that I had to pay 50% upfront before they would order them. I declined their offer.

Thanks JGP. As I said in an earlier post I'll try Music Mate Park Meadows... it's the closest to me and I enjoyed the service over the phone.

Sound Select is more of an online store, and the stock they do carry is aimed at the DJ/live sound market. Not really a guitar oriented store in my experience.

If you want DJ controllers, that's your place, if you want anything guitar related, not sooooo much.
