David Gilmour Strat

Hey Guys, I am looking at taking a David Gilmour Stratocaster (NOS) as part exchange on one of my guitars.
Would appreciate some feedback as to the desirability and pricing of this model.

Hmm - they were only released in October last year (IIRC), didn't expect to hear of one being traded so soon. I don't think we have seen any even arrive here yet, so I'm guessing the guitar is based in the US?

The NOS is $4,000 (at Sweetwater), relic is $4,800. Highly desirable custom shop model, but the pricing is obviously out of most people's reach - especially when they consider that they could put one together for less (the original is essentially a partscaster).

I think a guy in Cape Town has one, I remember him posting about it on the fender forum. He probably imported it himself though.

Music Connection on Jan Smuts here in Johannesburg had two of them, I saw them there two weeks ago. One was a relic and one was NOS.

...about R15K. Unless you want it routed for a Kahler and then filled again (which the proper relic from Fender features) ?

It actually goes for R70K for the exact replica - only a few hundred made. The full scale production model will hopefully be cheaper. I have held and played the R70K one - fantastic guitar but R70K does not make sense if you want to use it as a work horse guitar. R70K as a collectors item maybe, but if I own it and can't play it my life will be miserable.

I think the point of many of these limited editions is that they are or will be collectable. They are aimed more at people who want to buy a limited edition instrument on the grounds that it is likely to appreciate in value. Somebody who just wanted a guitar that played and sounded like Gilmour's could achieve that for rather less money.

In the end I stuck to what I know and took a Refinished 61 Strat with 64 Electronics. A Partsocaster in its own right. ?

Surely you could build a partcaster closer to the orginal for a hell of alot less

We have one at the Paul Bothner Music store in Plumstead, it's R60 000 I think...don't really like Fender so I don't really care plus it's black and it's horribly setup. the back of the headstock does say custom shop on it and it's got some little silver flicker switch - don't know if this is important but in case of relevance there you go.

It's a "neck on" switch to get neck + bridge pickups together or all three on.

I saw the Gilmour in the cherry lounge the other day and was too busy trying a Princeton Reverb RI to bother trying the Strat. Is that the relic Gilmour or has someone dinged it already?

BTW - R20K for a Princeton Reverb? Madness!

Honestly I think someone has probably dinged it already but I'm not familiar enough with the brand to be able to say for sure ? and yes that price is madness and compared to the measly R100 (yes I know having a job is better than no job at all but you people haven't seen my workload so don't try and rip me, plus I earned that much 4 years ago when I started there and I'm still only getting that much today - cigarettes where R14,50 when I started and now they're R23...yet still I receive no more ☹) I recieve every day one has to wonder where all that money is going...

Anyhoo count yourself lucky you didn't play it, the thing buzzes from frets 1 through to 21... ?
