While a lot of it wasn't new to me it's a nice perspective and I did pick up a few titbits of information (tape high end "relaxing" over time - no-one ever told be 'bout that!).

A point the author makes in passing when talking about the old school guys is that they didn't know the "detrimental" effects of EQ ...so they just used their ears until it sounded good to them. Yes, it's that old bugbear again - the long lost art of listening while you are string wringing or knob jobbing (as 'twere ?). Sure, the new gear doesn't sound quite like the old gear, but so what? Futz with it until it sounds good and you may just come up with something new.
