The Paul Bothner sponsored Challenge - June 2014

Paul Bothner Music is once again sponsoring this month's competition, and they are offering 3 sets of RotoSound strings for the winners of each category.

Paul Bothner also have recording facilities at most of their stores should you require assistance in recording your entry. Contact your closest store to book or for more info.

The challenge will be broken into 2 Categories.
Category 1 - "Beginner - Intermediate"
Category 2 - "Advanced - Professional"

The Theme

"cinematic soundtrack."

This could be anything really (could be an action sound track or suspense or comedy, etc)

Submit all entries on or before 23 June at 9:00. Entries must be submitted via EMAIL
Send the following:
1. An mp3 of your song
2. A link to your song
3. Your username on the forum
4. What category you wish to enter into.

awesome! was actually thinking of making my previous entry a theme song type thing... I will only be back in sa on 20 June... soon maybe I can dream up some ideas while I am away and pull a rabbit out the hat... lol.

I have a song that i wrote as an entry for the competition regarding the soundtrack for the film NIGHT DRIVE. I cannot sing or record, but, i have a friend who is a recording engineer, who did his bit, and another friend who did the vocals, so, would it be ok to enter this song, seeing as how it is not ''strictly'' all my own effort. If i can enter it, how do i upload it [dumb question i know, b-u-t ]?? help would be needed

Would you be recording the other instruments though? If you just have a friend singing, and another recording, then there is no problem with that, as long as you are involved in some capacity.

To upload, you just send me an email with your mp3, and then you can use another platform such as soundcloud, dropbox, reverbnation etc to upload your song. This isn't a strict requirement, I just ask this so that when I update the hall of fame, I can use those links to the songs.

This is gonna be a good one! Is there a 2 minute time limit? I remember thinking there was but im not sure if all that has been removed along with the 4 instruments excluding vocals limit? Cause for this it might be interesting to try vsts to make a classical piece with orchestral instruments but it will likely go way over 4 if thats the case.

was wondering the same... But I think the central instrument would have to be guitar...hehe...

I'm not sure there are track limits or time limits. But, most people when voting don't listen to the whole song (I would imagine) if you have 8-10 participants with a 4 minute track, that's 40 minutes just listening to people's songs. That's why I will always aim to get my message across in 60 seconds.

Yes, I agree with Paul, try at best to keep tracks under 2 min.

As for the amount of tracks, I've always been an advocate for more, but, that's only because I have a computer which can support multiple tracks. Not all of us have those same features, and it does level the playing field to have 4 tracks, or at least the same number of tracks. It will certainly also challenge you to try get a cinematic sound with only 4.

But if you feel really strongly about it, let me know. I'm always open to spicing things up

That's pretty cool. But as I've said before, know that once you become aware of these things, you can't always go back. ? I sometimes watch film scenes with the sound off and then again to judge the impact the sound and music. The difference in feel can sometimes be huge.

And the frogs. The Baja California Treefrog makes a very distinctive "ribbit" noise, unlike pretty much every other frog. But you could reasonably assume it's a component of the nighttime soundscape from Australia to India, based on movie sound design...
