Don't know if I would have been more upset if she'd been in bed with another guy!!!
The real question is were you jealous of her or of the guitar? ? I suppose you could always think of it as a
menage a trois if that makes it easier to stomach. ?
It depends partly on hand size, partly on what you are used to. You can get used to anything, but someone with small hands and thinner fingers will often naturally prefer a narrower neck, but that same neck will feel crowded to someone with meathooks for hands. I don't think the width matters in the long run and I don't believe that a wider neck is better to learn on (that's an extension of the old "you must start on a classic guitar" myth).
I've got a range of widths from 42mm wide (Sanox), through 44mm (Strat) to 50mm (12-string, classic).
Now I think what will make a huge difference in playability - especially for a beginner - is the nut action. A lower nut action will make a much wider neck more comfortable than a narrow neck with a high nut action. In fact a low nut action makes the whole guitar feel much easier to play - even in the higher registers (strangely enough).
