As we've discussed different OSs - and their pros and cons with a view to recording - here's some news about Windows 7:

Have been testing Windows 7 for awhile, It's just Vista dressed up a bit. I was expecting something quite different.
Any of you Guys going Norio's route with Ubuntu Studio. I have finally got a copy will be installing in the next week or so.

Wizard

Was chatting to one of the IT techies who has been beta testing Windows 7 yesterday.

His insights were:
- less resource hungry than Vista (XP used dynamic memory allocation, Vista pre-allocated and W7 is back to dynamic)
- more stuff plugs and plays and installations are thus easier
- it will run on small, slow machines which Vista can't
- reckons it outperforms XP
- he loves it

Heath

i have been running windows 7 since the beta was released , it's stable , uses xp drivers , almost all programs will work . i honestly believe that m$ got it right this time

Riaan

I guess I'll stick to XP for now and go straight to Windows 7 and miss Vista altogether then.

Is there a post somewhere about Ubuntu studio? If so I missed it, can you direct me to it. If not, what's it like? Sorry, off topic :-[

It does take some re-adjustment if you're coming from an XP background but Ubuntu Studio comes with a lot of professional-quality 100% free software. (Ardour is definitely a professional-level DAW. Not calling it the best out there, I wouldn't know, but it's very good!)
