Ok, a quick guide on what worked for me.

Installed GR and plugged guitar into the line in on my soundcard.
Worked like that, but with a delay. Configured the delay on the soundcard (it had it's own ASIO driver). Delay gone.

For recording. Downloaded reaper and installed - easy enough. Tried to run both reaper and GR at the same time, but wouldn't work. Cursed and battled for about two hours, then gave up and read the reaper and GR manuals and found out about the GR plugin for reaper.

Set the plugin up and now it all works nicely together.

Well basically for me I have my guitar plugged into my amp and the line out amp feature into the recording input in the sound part of the PC.

Now I think this must be the first mistake. A few things that Ive noticed is that:
- I can make the guitar play through the amp and the speakers when I have it plugged in.
-It is insanely loud ( I literally keep the volume on like 3-4 out of 100 to have it around the same as other sound
-I can record playing through a program like audacity or something ( terrible terrible sound though)

When I run guitar rig I can't hear anything. I dont have a good sound card , Its the one thats joined to the motherboard .

I'm extremely green at sound software and technology.

Plugged into mic or line in? Perhaps it's in mic and has the +10 gain feature enabled..

plugged into mic . the one with the red ring around it ( my technical explanation ) Is it supposed to go into the line in?

I plugged the guitar straight into the line in on the soundcard.
Plugged in like that I could hear sound when I played the guitar - without having guitar rig open.

Also had to tell GR what to use for sound - it's under File -> Audio and MIDI Settings

For the Driver I chose ASIO (my card supoprted it - you might have only something like WASAPI). Then for the device I chose my soundcard.

From there, GR worked fine.

With WASAPI as the driver you may have a problem with sound being delayed - meaning you play a string and only hear it a second or few later. If that is the case you might want to install ASIO4ALL from http://www.asio4all.com/ which should help with the delay thing.

OK, always a bad move to learn two complicated pieces of software at once. Concentrate on one or the other and learn how to use it properly before you move on to using the other and then eventually both together.

Yes use the line in - your amp's line out probably puts out a hefty signal. Although if you use Guitar Rig, you should actually plug the guitar directly into the computer - GR does all the stuff your amp would.

my line in port dosent work. Is it not a feature on some sound cards or is it a standard? Ive got the line in on the front of the PC. Dont think its even connected to anything. Are there other line-in ports on the soundcard? I've got 6 jack inputs at the back. Not sure what they are all for except for the sound line in. Is that the only other line-in?

the front might not be connected to anything, but one of the 6 at the back is definitely a line in. Just off the top of my head, green is line out, pink is mic, blue or black might be line in(can't remember now)

EDIT:

Green, orange, black and grey are speaker outputs - so you don't use those
Pink is Mic In
Light Blue is Line In

This is on the onboard soundcard my PC has (I have never used it - never even been enabled) - Should be the same configuration/colours on yours. So, plug the cable into the light blue socket - see if that sorts you out.

I stumbled across this handy thing last night in GR3 and thought that I would share it in case others are like me and dont read the manual...

I recorded something on the first tape deck and then while that was running on a loop I changed the effects. So I could see how the same riff sounded with an acoustic effect and then with a heavy metal effect, then with a wah effect and so on by only playing it once. But I am sure that you already knew that ?
