Intel is very good, and they have become increasingly good over the market. I always used to support AMD, but not anymore.
I've always been an Intel guy (processor and chipset). The one exception was an AMD 64, which died on me. Usually by the time they are hopelessly outdated, my machines are still working and end up being given away.
The mobo technology has really come a long way, I'd say its possible to get one with an integrated graphic card, but it might make a bit more sense to rather get a low end seperate card, that way you can free up your computers procesesing.
That's what I've always done, low-end, passively cooled. I just wondered if things had changed.
Also def a high end i5 as opposed to low-end i7.
Why? While performance may be similar, I'm thinking the upgrade path is more open on the i7 (then again, I rarely upgrade processors).
RAM is also going really cheap these days. You can get 4GB for like R450. I recommend min of 8gb, but preferably 12gb+
Aiming at 16 to start and I'll double it when I can...
If you want a super PC, maybe invest in a Solid state harddrive, and install your DAW on there (not necessarily the project files though). You'll find that the DAW and the operating system (in both installed on that harddrive) will run very quickly and very smoothly
Can't quite justify it yet. Quick loading and quiet are nice features, but not essential. Sustained transfer rates on the audio drive are the most important thing for me, to get the track count up.
