I thought it was a bit of a curate's egg. Some of the new pieces are just grooves with not much form to them. But the stuff the fans actually wanted to hear - the Zep songs - is rearranged in a quite adventurous way. Plant's solo career up to this point had been a bit careful. He got more interesting, more out of the comfort zone going forward.

I recall reading an interview with Plant years ago in which he said the ultimate Zep song, the song that got closest to what they wanted to do and what they thought they were about was not "Stairway" but "Kashmir".

Agreed, but for me there's a certain magic to even the tracks that were seemingly jam sessions. Simple arrangements that kind of gave a look inside what must have been a part of the creative process of LZ.

Also agreed. I found I loved one or two tracks on each of his solos, but most were, yes... safe.
